I am looking at a few different breeds of horses at the moment and one that interests me is the larger Welsh cob.

I know that there is the Maesmynach bloodlines who seem to produce bigger Welsh cobs - are there any other bloodlines that i should have a look at which are produced for the bigger size?

Thank you for any information.

Mmmm interesting, I am worried about mine not making the height after posting on here about what her final height may be, thinking she was going to be bigger, but the feedback I got was that she could end up below 14.2hh - I only mention this as she's Fronarth on her Dam's side and Thornyside on her Sire's side............and both mentioned as being the larger blood lines above! I now have hope again lol x

can i ask why you want a larger welsh cob?

the only problem, is that they lose the pony characteristics as they get bigger, so if you want to show you will be somewhat disadvantaged with some judges if they judge on type aswell as performance.

we had a 16.2 welsh stallion (will find picture) who was incredibly old fashioned and added bone to his stock, but would never have gone in the modern day showring (hendy brenin both sides) was a cracking mans horse though.
got him as a 15yr old untouched stallion en route to killing, bought him for my dads birthday, nursed him back to health, broke him to ride and drive, covered a few mares then unfortunately had to sell him due to my dads illness. soft as a brush.

Langarth (if they still breed pure breds), some of the Derwen, and Menai too used to have some bigger ones? 15hh+ is quite common for a pure bred (they are any size over either 13hh or 13.2hh).

I'll second the Fronarth and Thorneyside votes, also Haighmoor seem to be on the larger side. A friend recently had their stallion gelded and he is 15.3

Going back a bit, but Ebbw Victor produced some surprises. He is my boys grandsire and mine stands 16hh+ and his sire Heolyrhedyn Virgo was bigger.

Phil's sire is 16hh (Derwen Bred).

Phil also has a decent amount of Llanarth and Ffoslas blood on his mum's side but I have a feeling his mum was under 15hh but built like a brick outhouse. Phil is just under 15.2hh. I've a friend who is 5'10-5'11 and looks fine on him.

i have had welsh cobs ( bred and bought and sold) for 27 years, in all that time i have had several of all the breeding you have mentioned and very rearly did i have anything over 14.2, my fronarth mares were 14.1, my thornyside bred cobs were under 14.2, in fact i have a terminator mare here that is 13.3, nebo all about 14 hands a couple made 14.2. i think it is the luck of the draw, if you want a big one, dont buy a youngster, wait until they are at least 3, they cant shrink

Maesmynach for big cobs.

I bred a foal out of my TB event mare by Maesmynach Welsh Flyer, the mare was 16hh the stallion 16hh, the prodgeny ended up 18.hh. Big enough for you. Eric Davies of the Maesmynach Stud came to see this monster as he couldnt believe his stallion could produce such an enormous horse!! The big horse was an excellent dressage horse.

It would also depend on the build of the cob, obviously the chunkier, broader it was the more it will take up your leg so height would not be such an issue? I've a 15hand (maybe+) 4yr old for sale.......

My Maesmynach boy is 16.1 and he's fab. I'm 5'11 and he takes up my leg really well. I couldn't have asked for a better all-round horse really, and he's just getting better with age (rising 11 now) :)

Thank you very much everyone - i didnt expect so many replies - really helpful - and definitely a lot of studs and bloodlines to have a look at. Thank you again.

I used to ride a full up 16.2hh Sec D for someone who was bred at Derwen. I have to say he was a lovely chap , really laid back although a bit stroppy at times!

*eyes up thread keenly*

Anyone recommend any of these lines for tall AND chunky types? I used to loan a wonderful Sec D who was 15.2 and built like the proverbial **** house, still quite a pony ish face (and 100% pure pony brain in there ;) ). When times comes to buy again I would love to find another of that ilk...

I cant recommend Thorneyside Stud enough, Peter Grays horses are true to type and full of quality. They are substancial and make wonderful driving horses, show horses and riding horses. Google the stud and make your own mind up.
