Lazy horse owners! Grrrrr

There is a horse at my yard that I bring in and put to bed every night during in the week... because i'm nice lol. But tonight the horse was laft out until gone 5 (they bring in quite early at my yard) when owner normally is early and no one was down the yard. I tried ringing the horses owner several times but no answer so I brang the horse in and fed him etc...

The owner has still not rang me to ask why I rang or if I brought her horse in. She never rides him and does the bear minimum for this horse. His bed is a mess and he looks in really bad condition!

I'm i being silly or should I say something because this is not the first time that she has forgotten to put her horse to bed.

How can you forget that you have a horse?

But then you remember you have a reliable, unpaid groom who will always think of the horse first.

I think I'd raise the subject. Suggest you first check the mirror to see if 'MUG' is clearly written on your forehead.

Well done for putting the horse first!
 
Last time she 'forgot' the horse YM did speak to her about it but nothing came of it.

I really want to say to her that shes going to have to start bringing her horse in herself but the horse looks so poor that I kind of feel sorry now.

So frustrating!! Wouldn't you of wondered why someone from the yard was ringing you several times???
 
If she can't be bothered ten surely you're making the situation worse by bringing the horse in and it potentially being stuck in for long periods? I'd be inclined to leave it out so at least it's got food/water and space to roam - obviously if yard rules permit horse being left out...even if not I'd leave it out and then let YM tell her off for breaking rules by leaving horse out. Better that than bringing him in to stand in his own s**t if she doesn't muck out etc!

I would of left him out if he wasn't running up and down like a mad man! I think i would of rather had him standing in his own **** then doing himself a mischief :o

If he wasn't running I would of let her get the *******ing as I would of loved to have seen it lol.

Report it to the YO or YM as if you bring the horse in and for some reason it gets injured you may be held responsible. Are you sure they didn't want it left out?
 
It's a nightmare situation but it seems odd that you personally are the one left worrying about it. What's your YO doing about it? If you had left the horse out running the fence line, would they have brought it in or been concerned about it tonight? If not, it's worrying more care isn't being taken by the YO to supervise the horses on their property. Thing is, if you keep on brining in perhaps the YO doesn't realise the gravity of the situation (although they ought to notice who's bringing in who's horse surely??? :( )
 
Some people just dont care and unfortunatly its the horses who end up suffering in the end as people get fed up of being used as an unpaid groom. Sometimes these people need a wake up call that its not every one elses responsibility to look after their horse and if they dont make arangments in advance people wont do their horse for them.

You can either tell her that your going to charge her from now on for all the services you provide to her horse or just stop doing it and let the YO deal with it. Its up to you and its hard I know similar has happend where we are but the final straw was her doing something unthinkably stupid and endangering horses before I snapped.

Yes I will do..

We're not allowed to keep them out and normally on weekends (when she remembers she has a horse) they are normally down early at around 3ish and I left the yard around half 5 and still no sign what so ever!

I think I will just tell her that I'm done trying to help her! She doesn't even put the hay in the stable or make up a net or feed. She even asked me to ride her horse and when i agreed she then expected me to muck out and do everything for her?! I declined the offer of riding him again...
 
Does the yard owner live on site? I'd speak to her and tell her if she wants you to do her horse then she can pay you, because you are no longer helping her otherwise. It's NOT your responsibility. URGH hate people like that.
 
Oh ok makes more sense now lol, sorry! Poor chap, I'd be mentioning it to YM and she can then care for him and send owner a whacking great full livery bill for the work done! Maybe hitting her in the pocket will remind her she has a horse to care for?

No and I don't think she really has a clue on how badly the poor boy is being kept... I think i need to toughen up a bit :o

Yer that sounds like a good idea but she's one of them people that never listens, it's like banging your head on a brick wall! lol
 
Try it a slightly different way.

Tell the owner you cant help her out anymore.

When the horse is left out, like tonight, ring the yard owner and ask what she wants doing about it. Say you cant bring in because the horse has no bed, food or water.

Obviously you will still end up helping, but at least the yard owner will be bothered by endless phone calls, might prompt them to do something.

Poor horse though.
 
Yer i think that will help... Its so frustating that she has gotten away being so lazy so many times but i think me trying to help is just making her worse!

Never have known anyone to just leave their horse and 'forget' about it?
 
You set yourself up for this fall when you started bringing her horse in regularly for her.
Most places have a policy where you bring the last horse in and she sounds like someone who is playing on it tbh.
Speak to the yo and see how it goes after yo has spoken to her.
Then you either continue as is, where shes taking advantage of your good nature or back off from being an unpaid groom to someone whos clearly taking the p.
Just out of curiosity, where would you stand if her horse spooked and got away from you, do you have her permission to handle her horse ?
 
Oh trust me you are not alone on this one theres one where we are. Thankfully she has just got the hint that I'm not doing anything for her horse any more, I did have a fairly useful incident (could have been much worse but thankfully wasnt) that made me realise how much I was doing for her and has given the perfect reason for stopping being her slave.

If she leaves it out again I would throw it some of her hay out, presuming she has some which isnt always a given :rolleyes:, then leave it for YO to deal with. Then you havnt left it without hay or water and shes the one breaking the rules about leaving horses out and you dont have to worry about it having nothing to eat.

TBH I don't really know, I have my own insureance for handling other peoples horses and seen as I handle the horse quite often then I assume I have permission?!

Didn't realise the YO doesn't live on site. Do as above^^^ Ring YO and tell her that you have been bringing horse in and feeding and watering but you can't do it anymore and you will have to leave it with YO from now on as the owner won't listen and just expects you to bring it in.

Do they come in a morning and let it out?:confused:

Yer they come down in the morning (using the term morning loosely!!) I will speak to her or yard manager tomorrow. I just can't believe how lazy people can be!!! Or am i just being naive?! :rolleyes:

No I don't thinkyou are being naive. There's just no excuse for this kind of behaviour from people and it sounds like you're being taken advantage of. What if you didn't bring the horse in and the owner turned up in the morning to turn it out?? Is the horse being fed if it is in poor condition?

I don't think you naive just soft;) But I would do as you have to be honest but I would be ranting at them ALL THE TIME and threatening to send them if fact I would give them a bill of £50 p.w for your services:D

TBH she probably would have been greatful that her stable didn't need 'mucking out' lol and it only gets a scoop of Alfa A am and pm so not much! I knew the horse a few years ago prior to me getting my current horse and the difference in condition is shocking!

If there is a yard manager is it not their job to oversee the yard, to check everything is done as rules state and in my view to make sure that owners are caring for their horses, it may be DIY but I feel that yard owners or managers should be able to ensure the horses on a yard have a certain standard of care.
 
At my yard people charge for services.

First speak to her and the YM and then come to a agreement.

I never leave a horse out on its own - but at my yard we all help each other. But you do get people that take advantage.
