As title really ? I have always been taught to leave boots/bandages on for a while (15/20mins) after exercise.

Has anyone else ? And can you shed some light on why I've been taught this? Its just something i've always done but not really sure on a reason ?

I don't remember this one.

I always take Dizz's boots off straight away and give her legs a rub where they've been. My thinking is that I don't want her legs to overheat - her boots have airflow holes and designed to keep her legs as cool as possible, but that's when she's moving.

Yes I do too, I also leave my saddle on for a good 10 mins after exercise. Get quite grumpy if someone else is riding my grey horse and tries to take his saddle off!
I think it all comes down to someone telling me that if you remove the saddle too quickly after being sat on for a while the blood rushes back to the muscles and can be detrimental but I can't remember the whole story.
It's habit now for me so that's what I do, I also only ever walk for the last mile of a hack and I get off loosen girths and nosebands and walk them up the driveway.

I always leave them on for the opposite reason to you .. to let them cool down gradually instead of her legs being cold straight away I also sponge them once her boots are off (me paranoid? YES )

Off topic but .. How is the cold ?

Taking them straight of wouldn't worry me but I take mine of after he has been untacked, so only about 5 mins after riding.

I heard something similar about saddles too but again can't remember the full story

My routine is now -

(At the last gate out hacking/ end of session in school)

Get off ..Loosen girth , undo flash and noseband and walk her back to the yard or do 3 laps of school)

Back at the yard
Undo girth fully , put saddle cover on saddle , undo breastplate and take her bridle off (then wash her bit)

The take saddle off (leaving the numnah on her back) .. eventually take the numnah off (give or take its about 5 mins)

But her in her stable (once sponged/rugged) wait 20 mins (or occasionally get on with other jobs
wink.gif
) take boots/bandages off , sponge legs and put back in stable

The latest fad of the eventing brigade is to leave the XC boots on whilst you hose their legs afterwards down, their reasoning being they offer support to the leg as it's cooling down.
I can't see it working, it's more likely to be a method of washing the boots than anything else!

Cold is doing nicely ta - I cr*p, but cold is good lol. I always get bad colds boo hoo.

I walk neds back the last mile/cool down after a schooling sesson. Off, girth and noseband loosened. Walked back to stable. Tie up, then kit off

. Wash down all sweaty bits, usually with a Dandy brush and cold water, unless a very hot day or a very hot horse in which case it's the hose

.

LOL !! Two jobs in one !!

I've done it for as long as I can remember (for once I am ahead of the trend !

But I haven't a clue as I said behind the reasoning to it just daren't not do it now just incase

This is interesting

. I thought they'd all go to the cool boots, or would that be to cool too quickly?

Interested because I thought of getting some cool boots, but just for use after hacking/schooling for now (until we're both fit enough to do anyhing strenuous lol).

See I'd let you ride my horses without getting grumpy! That is almost exactly my routine although my boots don't stay on quite as long.

We can be obsessive together

People do genuinely think I am off my rocker .. as it adds about 30 minutes onto a 20 minute schooling session

If i'd done this on any of the yards i've worked on i would either have been b******d for wasting time or Laughed off the premises and all the horses were healthy, sound and happy. No offence to anyone cos how you look after your own horse is up to you but imo it's a bit over the top unless you're talking about a seriously unfit or unsound horse

I never get why people say 'no offence' when they are obviously going to cause offence - lol !
laugh.gif

As it happens the horse in question is 'seriously unfit and unsound' well she's actually sound but she has problems with her legs and feet
smile.gif

Alsoooooo a lady I worked for insisted her horses boots were left on and horse was dealt with similarly to how I deal with mine and I never got laughed at
wink.gif

Ofcourse horses for courses , but I have enought time to do so , so I don't need to cut any of it out
smile.gif

I genuinely did mean no offence though :-) i mean i'm not an expert or anything and i'm not suggesting you change your routine it's just i could imagine myself working till midnight if everyone did that lol

I only have the one horse at the moment so its not that much of a problem
wink.gif

Really it is all easily worked around other things (like the 20mins she has her boots on I do either skep out or fill haynets etc)

I have to wait for her to cool down so she can be fed anyway so I'm stuck hanging round anyway
