After some encouragement from HHO I braved a little bareback (schooling exercises in walk only!) and whilst it is def harder to balance on the little Arab than the huge creature I tried vaulting on (only other bareback experience this centaury!) I like it. So, thinking I'll continue even once posh saddle comes back...

Want to get it right though so have a question:

You Tube vids of bareback mostly show the leg position as more forwards than I'd ride in a saddle, almost by the girth area. Is this because there are loads of Western riders on there or should I not have the head-hip-heel line bareback? Have tried a little of both and can't say horsey has an obvious preference...

I didnt think it mattered - just make sure your leg isnt on horsey shoulder i guess. But i could be wrong lol x

I'd keep it where ever you can keep your balance best... I don't pay too much attention to my leg position when riding bareback, but do make sure it isn't on the flanks/shoulder

I sit the same way bareback as I do in a saddle. Bareback is great for making sure you aren't tensing your thighs in order to keep your balance!

I have done a fair bit of riding bare back, and the most important thing is ride where it is comfortable! Some horses have a decent wither so it is more comfortable to sit further back, QH are generally flat round barrels and sitting forward is quite comfortable, and has the benefit of the mane being in easy reach!

How you sit depends on what you are doing, at a walk you can probaly get the head-hip-heel line (hard to hold as no foot support), and it is good practice for stretching your calf muscles.
But if you want to go faster trot/ canter (or flat out gallop hearding 2yr olds... ) it is more comfortable, easier to sit on and balance if you bring you knee/ leg up into a position more like you are in a GP saddle. Your thighs & knees should do most of the hanging on dont make the mistake of gripping with your heels....

Experiment with what you find comfortable, it is different for everyone! Have fun riding bare back is great for your position/ leg strength.

I've found that I slip into a classical position when bareback but comfort for you and 'ossy is paramount. Bareback is great, I wish we were all taught to ride like the spanish, 6months bareback on the lunge! lol

Thank you everyone for helping - very much appreciated!

Was thinking of having a go at some trotting poles this week (sitting well back from the wither!) so I'll see what helps me stay on best for that...

Mane-grabbing probably!
