Going throught the turnout rugs on my share horse, lots are missing one or both leg straps and the ones with fillet strings. Any ideas where to get replacements cheaply?

you can get them off e bay quite easily. cant remember the name of the lady that makes them but she does all the rug strap type things. i had some of the front fastenng straps off her with no probs. edited to say that ride away also sell them for £5.

A friend lost her horse due to leg straps. She got a back leg caught in one, kept pulling or kicking out until she cracked a bone which would not heal and led directly to her being PTS. We now remove all leg straps on new rugs and only use fillet strings, and all rugs stay in place.

Im happy that theres this post now. Maisie has come up with abit of a sore where the leg straps have been .. not becase there too tight but field owner said that I cant loosen them anymore because she will get herself caught in them. Its because her skin is so thin (shes TB) plus on top of that there nylon ones aswell. Weve now resorted in putting a cover around the leg straps for now untill I can get something instead of the leg straps. Pain in the bum!

Missing leg straps=good news, you don't have to take them off!

Agree with others who find fillet strings safer and more pleasant for horse.

take the leg straps off and use them as the fillet string. Seen far too many accidents and injuries with leg straps , and have never seen one as a result of a fillet string. If your rug moves without the leg straps then to be honest it doesn;t fit well. Non of my horses, and non of my liveries have leg straps. we all have fillet strings. And I was on a yard a few years ago where the YO removed leg straps from all the liveries rugs. In his opinion they cause serious problems, they are a pain to do up and undo getting covered in poo and mud. Clips getting jammed on /off. He also discovered that leg straps added on 3 mins per horse to rug up, and he had about 30 horses to turn out in the morning. by removing the leg straps he saved himself at least 2 mins per horse. ie 60 mins - so 1 hour, morning and evening A huge amount of time wasted each week.

Personally I prefer leg straps as although the rug with the fillet string is quicker to put on/off I find it catches all the poop and then it gets spread all over her back legs and tail. Horrible and dirty!!

I don't have any problems with leg straps rubbing legs as I loop them through each other so they don't lie against any skin.

Since I only have one horse the extra minute to do up the leg straps doesnt really bother me.
