I bought lot 135 a very lovely, super chilled out Sec D 2 1/2 yo (black with 4 whites and a nice white face!)

There were a batch of lightweight foals that broke my heart as we fetching pence.

Goodness, didn't realise it was 'that' bad :(

Glad I didn't go (am only just down the road from there) as I'd have ended up coming back with something!

prices were heartbreaking!

Which worked out in my favour though... exactly what I wanted!!! (but black not chestnut... huge improvement).

I had to leave when the tb foals went through.

Have you ridden it? Years ago I used to frequent Exeter horse sales - would always ride (unless it was unbroken) what I had bought home as soon as I bought it home. Over the years had my fair share of lovely animals, and some duds as well - will never forget the 'bolter'......
My best buy - which was supposed to be 4 broken - and was actually 2 unbroken - is still the star of the local PC - I paid £150 - sold him broken 12 months later, broken for £350 - last heard he changed hands for £6K.......

unbroken (he's only 2 and a half).

I got a bit bored this afty so he has had a walk up the road and back with a saddle on? no drama!!!

Hope he stays this chilled out forever.

Drugged???!! Of course not -a bored approach to horse breaking - maybe I will, maybe I won't sounds the perfect way. Good luck with him.

Prices were dire apparently.
TB foals that made £20 a head.....awful

That is really upsetting, when I think of my TB mare tucked up in a deep bed all warm and toasty so happy with life and her distant relatives being sold for 'bag of carrots' money that is just awful, I can only hope someone took pity on them, poor little bubbas.

I guess we will know the answer to that one this time next week!

Yep, he wont have any real education until the summer but I thought I may as well get his thoughts on it today while I had tack out anyway.

May even take him showing next week as I have no other plans :)

A cautionary tale for all those people who think that to breed a youngster is a nice idea......I have been given , yes given, a V nice ID X TB gelding 5 year old gelding this winter to play with - if he breaks a leg (certainly hope he does not) but that is the breeders issue, not mine) Come Spring if I still like him, I can name my price to buy........The horse I had cost the breeder circa £3K to produce - at the moment he is worth about £1K - and if I add value to him - that is my value added - so will be still be offering £1K come Spring. Those TB foals if off spring of decent TB stallions who prob had stud fees min £1K - and possibly a lot more - and are young TB's, less suited to a new job then my IDXTB - shocking.

Why people are still breeding is beyond me.
These foals cost money to put on the ground. They cost money to chip and passport. They cost yet more money to transport to market.....to make £20.......

it really is from one extreme to the other

last weekend we all watched Frankel possibly the greatest TB of all time

and a week later TB foals get sold for £20 crazy its as if people need to re learn what a fantastic horse the TB is the sooner the better.

You are so right! And when I want a new horse, I would go off like a shot to buy a used racehorse from Ascot - and have a lovely example of one here that we paid £400 for one of my kids - came 6th in his first ever HT - but he was 7 years when we got him. Would be less enthusiastic about buying a foal. But then there are so many racing / point-to-point yards around that will break a horse for you circa £100 per week - and send you back a horse that has had some experience - £20 purchase price - £500 professional breaking - still a cheap horse.......

That is sad bless them, agreed why are they being bred? Surely they only want to breed high end ones, I don't know how it works in racing, like how many out of a batch of foals makes it as a racehorse. My old loan horse had half brothers and sisters winning and worth quite big money, but he was a big big thing so not built for flat racing, baffles me really how they know which ones to take on at that age. I am tempted to get one of these bargain youngsters one day but I wouldn't have a clue what to do with a foal really!

Wigton Horse Sales is on today- its going to be grim. Shame I am at work as I quite fancy getting a coloured cob for £5 and breaking it to sell on. It was bad in the April sales, god knows what the ponies will look like this year :(
The Fell pony sale last week was grim as well, £20 a pony, apparently quite a few went to zoos.

When the economics don't add up, you have to hope that those who are sending these youngsters to auction have learned a harsh lesson and won't breed any more until the market recovers.

They have probably paid a stud fee, kept the mare for a year to produce a foal which is sold for a pittance 6 months later - like you say, it has to be chipped, passported and taken to a sale. It's madness :(
