Has anyone had a lesson/clinic with a List 1 Judge before? The opportunity to have one has come up and I'm not sure if I should do it, or just do my regular private lesson with my coach!

I ride at Prelim level so I'm not sure how much I would get out of it?

i recon you'll get a whole lot out of it, normally its not a great idea to muddy the waters with different views, but i think having a new set of eyes on the situation every so often can really help with new ideas and ways to move forward

Do it! I had a lesson with one back in October. She taught my friend on her mare who's doing BD elementary so I thought I'd be laughed out of the school on my just back 4 yr old. Not a bit of it, she was amazing and I got loads out of it.

Thanks - yes I'm quite concerned about 'too many cooks' and all that. I have a specific coach for Dressage and another for jumping which is fine, however I've recently had to bring another Dressage coach into the mix as mine is having a baby so will be out of action for a few months. I'm just getting to know the new coach so was thinking maybe I am best to give the list 1 judge clinic a miss this time around?

Yup had a lesson/test riding with Sue McMahon today and got LOADS out of it. Also have the odd lesson with Andrew Bennie and take so much away from it every time.

I had one with a list 1 judge on my old horse and didn't enjoy it one bit, she checked her phone constantly and had me doing the same exercise for so long my horse started to anticipate it and it really caused us an issue, I went away feeling terrible, but obviously this is only 1 person and doesn't mean all are the same!
It was quite expensive also and I found her tone quite sarcastic which when I have met her and seen her teaching is just how she is but certainly not nice in a 1 to 1 lesson :(
I think finding an instructor you not only get on with but that you really trust their guidance is pretty difficult!

I would go as the one I had lessons with taught me a lot and also gave me a lot of ideas about how to deal with things as they cropped up.

My trainer is a list 1 judge who gives as much attention to novice riders on their lesson as he does to advanced riders.

My 'home' trainer is a a list 1 judge, and I also do regular sessions with a List 1 judge who comes up every month to do clinics in the area.

Sue McMahon is very local to me, and I loved having a lesson with her via my local RC :) It helped she liked my little TB, but I got a huge amount from her lesson

ETA I also had a couple of lessons with Pammy Hutton at Talland, she was incredible and again I got loads out of it!

Excellent to hear! We are just starting out at Prelim and I still have basic issues to fix like my position and her inconsistency to the contact, so wasn't sure if we'd be laughed out of the arena!

I will post up the takeouts on my blog and share on here :)

I also had a lesson with Sue and I've found her to be quite inspirational. I train regularly with a very experienced trainer who knows my horse well and who has been incredibly helpful and supportive but Sue just gives me a different "take" on things and has really improved my ability to ride a test. She's also given me heaps more confidence. Go for it!

I used to have regular lessons with a list 1 judge when I was only competing at prelim & Novice. It transformed my horse who I'd always really struggled with on the flat & I got loads out of it. I never felt I was wasting her time or mine & the lessons were worth every penny.

Thank you :) I already get lessons with a GP rider and feel the same, worth every penny and never felt like anyone's time was wasted. Was worried I'd be laughed out by a List 1 judge!

I have a choice to do either general riding lesson, or test riding. Which would you do? Thinking test riding!

I used to have lessons with a list 1 , now FEI, judge and she naturally geared them towards test riding and improving my marks, some of the tips I picked up were so simple but made so much difference to how you ride a movement, you will benefit from either lesson, as they are at that level they will work on you and your horse as a whole, pick up on your weaknesses and your tests should improve whichever group you join in with.

I'm sure you'll get something out of it, but one thing to remember is that not all people have good coaching skills, however capable, even brilliant they are. That applies to any discipline.
