Lets see your pity buy

Aww well done to everyone for taking the time and affection and helping these less fortunate horses. Our pity buy was in 2000 and I was 10, we found Conker, rang up at about 8pm and it was pitch black, middle of winter and the woman said we could go and look at him then if we wanted but wear wellies as it was abit muddy.. Took one of mums good friends who had had horses for donkeys years for a second opinion. Arrived about 9pm and the mud more or less went over your wellies it was that bad, he was kept in a brick built old building in the middle of a field, asked if he was suitable for light riding and hacking and she said yes he was brilliant with anything, over the field behind was a company that tested bombs! so he was literally bomb proof! Mums friend gave one look at my mum and said if you don't get this pony I will! there's no way we are leaving him here! The next day he arrived and seeing him in daylight showed how bad he was, he was skin and bone and every rib stuck out in his body, feet were a mess etc. So we got him sorted and back to tip top condition and he gave me so much confidence, he was only supposed to be on loan but about 2 months after having him the lady came to visit and said to mum we could have him, mum insisted on giving her money for him to make it a legitimate sale and he was ours for £40! He was freezemarked and we phoned up the freezemark company to try and get some history on him and his previous owners (before the lady who we got him off) had arranged for him to live out on her local pub landlords fields, he had then sold him on to the lady we bought him off and his original owners knew nothing of it! Usually he would come to call in the field and this one night I went to get him, he didn't come, he was at the very back of the field so when I walked up I found him struggling and holding one of his hind legs up, there was a huge pool of blood on the floor and when the vet arrived he said there was nothing he could do as he had shattered his cannon bone. I was devastated and didn't like to think how long he had stood like that in the field that day, I'm just glad he had 16 months of happiness before he went. He was the best £40 ever spent and gave me so much! We had him cremated and he is still in the garage!

Sorry about the essay! Photobucket playing up so here's a link to one pic I have on FB.

Charley, 8 months old, Spring 2009. Unwanted Christmas present. Skin and bones, covered in lice, UFP on top of his dreadful conformation.

Lovely photos enfys - as always - another couple of foot of snow and you may have lost him alltogether - good thing his ears are black!:D

All lovely stories , it makes me happy to think that there are some really caring people out there , and god some animals have to go through so much crap in their short lives. :(

Ellie was the bay SH SJ mare that I didn't want, but there was just something magical about her, so I bought her and 3 weeks later,.. she still looked like this!

Her head was a mess and her feet were an equal mess. She couldn't be handled safely,we so we took off the shoes and gave her time out 24/7 with some friends and with love, patience and time she slowly came right.

this is a great post ,amazing to everyone that has made good of their pity ponies! It is so great to see how with some tld they can be completely different! the before and after pics are phenomenal! well done everyone...amazing thread!

This little pony I bought as a rising 3 year old - virtually unhandled and off to the sales to await his fate if I hadnt of bought. Not mistreated as such but extremely scared of everything and his own shadow, not in very good condition (and abit ugly!) and wormy with poor feet. He had no name only a number. I think he may have ended up with the meat man had he gone to the sales..

Brilliant thread!

Lovely to see the work and care put into the poor horses.

My "pity" buy was a rescued Staff pup- we called him Harvey. He cost us £150 from rescue center and he was 13 weeks old at the time.

We were his 4th home.

This was my pity buy.....
She was a terrified foal, 5 months old and already had been off her mum for a good 3 weeks. Covered in lice, had worms, and under all that fluff was ribby.
The picture is October 09.

And this was her May 10.

(Not the best photo of her! But it gives you an idea of her condition....)

Stiggy before. Didn't technically buy him...OH just came home with him!

Now gelded, and having the makings of a pony with manners. Will hopefully break him to harness this summer.

I have 2!

The first is a Staffordshire Bull headed Terrier who'd been with 3 other families before we took her on. She eats the interiors of cars if left alone too long (30 seconds in her opinion), has chewed her way out of a front door (old door but still....) and jumped through 4 windows.

The 2nd is a Welsh/TB type mare who cannot be ridden due to a bad back but will live out her days with us. We were told she'd be fine after a bit of oestiopathy but that's not the case. She is my friend/confident, garden ornament, lawnmower and 'auntie' to all newcomers.

These animals come to us for a very good reason that we may not know....

I have had my girl for nearly 2 years (admit I havent done much with her... apart from love and spoil her :) )

The day I got her home...

She had patches of rainscald all over her back and bum and the insides of her legs were so sore and bald

About a week later... coats looking a lot better already

My pity buy :D
Merlin has behavioural issues due to being starved and abused as a foal. His owner had been told to have him PTS as he was dangerous and he went through six homes in as many weeks before I got him.

We brought Oscar as a pity buy two years ago. Thin as a hat rack, lame, full of infection....

I worked on him for two years, got him fit and healthy for my step mum, I was his main carer looking after him 6 days out of 7. Then her and my father split up - she shot him thinking she could claim on the insurance. She did not even tell me what she had done - I found out second hand and by finding the blood at the yard.

Best of it is when I posedt about this on this forum (see thread 'Oscars story') many people thought she had acted in a responsible manner.

?

I wanted advice about what I could do and many posters thought she had acted in a responsible manner.

Breaks my heart and if I am honest I wish she had not brought him
I would also just like to say that it is wonderful to see so many dedicated people who have looked after what could be called lost causes and for giving them their second chances xxx They all look wonderful

Sorry, I didn't read it like that.
I dont want to clog this thread with this but I fail to see how you could not have read the posts where people said that they thought that she had done was the responsible thing to do.... There were many posts that condemned her behaviour too....
