Aww well done to everyone for taking the time and affection and helping these less fortunate horses. Our pity buy was in 2000 and I was 10, we found Conker, rang up at about 8pm and it was pitch black, middle of winter and the woman said we could go and look at him then if we wanted but wear wellies as it was abit muddy.. Took one of mums good friends who had had horses for donkeys years for a second opinion. Arrived about 9pm and the mud more or less went over your wellies it was that bad, he was kept in a brick built old building in the middle of a field, asked if he was suitable for light riding and hacking and she said yes he was brilliant with anything, over the field behind was a company that tested bombs! so he was literally bomb proof! Mums friend gave one look at my mum and said if you don't get this pony I will! there's no way we are leaving him here! The next day he arrived and seeing him in daylight showed how bad he was, he was skin and bone and every rib stuck out in his body, feet were a mess etc. So we got him sorted and back to tip top condition and he gave me so much confidence, he was only supposed to be on loan but about 2 months after having him the lady came to visit and said to mum we could have him, mum insisted on giving her money for him to make it a legitimate sale and he was ours for £40! He was freezemarked and we phoned up the freezemark company to try and get some history on him and his previous owners (before the lady who we got him off) had arranged for him to live out on her local pub landlords fields, he had then sold him on to the lady we bought him off and his original owners knew nothing of it! Usually he would come to call in the field and this one night I went to get him, he didn't come, he was at the very back of the field so when I walked up I found him struggling and holding one of his hind legs up, there was a huge pool of blood on the floor and when the vet arrived he said there was nothing he could do as he had shattered his cannon bone. I was devastated and didn't like to think how long he had stood like that in the field that day, I'm just glad he had 16 months of happiness before he went. He was the best £40 ever spent and gave me so much! We had him cremated and he is still in the garage!
