After reading another thread I thought there must be plenty of us who have pity bought, so to start off here is mine

16.1 TB mare sold to be PTS, but knacker man had other ideas. The date should of been Jan 27 2010

What a transformation, she's a very lucky girl!!

My pity buy was a rottweiler, well he was a rescue really but we ended up having to pay £600 to get him off the original owner! We now have 3, the house is too small, the garden is too small and the sound of 3 snoring all night keeps me awake but I wouldn't change a thing :D

Thanks everyone, though I had hoped to see pics of others. Flick is a sweetheart & I consider myself very lucky to have her. My daughter loves her to bits & has certainly changed her tune, well you can imagine what she said when I took her off the trailer!!!

She's a cracker, but may I have a rant which is in no way aimed at you OP... sold to be PTS?! WTF?! SERIOUSLY! Why don't people face up to their responsibilities to a living, breathing, feeling, suffering, sentient being and give them a peaceful end at home? Not just cast them off like a pair of old shoes!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I am really glad your girl is doing well, but she is so lucky, how many others just like her will end up in awful places like Amersham? Horses give us so much, so willingly, is it so much to ask that we give them such a small thing back?

It makes me SO ANGRY!:mad:

I think Darco was my pity buy on Friday... Ho hum.

Rode her today (whilst pooping myself tbh) no manners, won't stand still and spooks at the silliest things i.e pile of wood. However, doesn't bat an eyelid at cars or motorbikes/tractors/mowers/quads/cows.... ??? LOL

Here's mine

He was never in bad nick but had some issues caused by previous owners. He was given to me as his last chance as it was me or the knackerman! I sorted out with the idea of selling him on. Somehow he is still here :)

Not long after I lost my spotty boy I bought these two at auction, they were pitifully thin (disguised a bit by their fluffy coats) they were 'yearlings' but probably about 8 months. My vet thought I would be lucky to keep either alive! They were full of worms and more or less unhandled.

They were a lovely pair and very sweet once they decided I wasn't too scary. I kind of hoped one or other might be a horse for me one day. They both thrived and changed beyond recogniton but didn't get big enough for me. One is now out competing BD, the other is a fantastic all rounder/family pony type. Both new owners keep in touch very regularly which is great,. I go and watch the dressage one compete whenever I can.

This is the family pony one just before I sold her

Amazing job :D xx

Lovely to see hapyy endings. I bought Ol last year, I had him a few weeks before this was taken so he wasn't that thin by then...

My TB was two days away from going to the sales with feet like this...

He was underweight, no muscle and no spark in his eye, but I could still see the kindness lurking. The owner agreed to sell him to me in instalments and he's been a joy. As I rehabilitated his hooves, his personality unfurled like a spring flower, but he remained sensible, level-headed and kind.

Well done you!
And in bitless bridle! (my horse is as well+barefoot)
Who says TB can't be ridden bitless? ;-) (my friend has 2 horses, one is a TB, both barefoot and bitless!)

Simple if you have the knackerman come out to you then it costs. I had to have an ex racer PTS & it cost about £80. This way they got about £100ea, there were 2 mares, both had lost condition. Being broodmares it might have been the foals that had pulled them down over winter, who knows. Also as a 3yo she ran into some fencing that was being taken down & made a mess of her legs & face. She has a lot of hair missing from these areas & I think that would have put people off.

As someone said, it was in the eye, there was something about Flick. Despite being much fitter she has been a sensible honest horse through out. My daughter says its like she is smiling, really loves her hacks out & it is rare to see her with her ears back.

Lovely to hear & see the stories of others. A word of caution though, a friend came close to buying an ex racer from another knackerman, on investigating found she was there for a good reason. While in racing she could just turn & it took 2 people to get her onto the track. When ridden she was unpredictable (could of been pain related). She then went to be a broodmare & her & the foal were meant to be put down as it had a deformed foot. Someone took her on & sorted the foot problem, but the mare produced 2 others by different stallions with the same problem. The money is in horses going for human consumption, & the only way that can happen is for them to go direct to the slaughter house. They may not always get dispatched the same day due to work load. If you cant take them direct then you do what these people did & sell via the knackerman, who will get a load together & makes the trip. If you pay him to put them down at home then then the meat gets sold to places like zoos & safari parks. But you have to pay for that option. I had no idea Flick had been sold to be PTS. I dont have an issue with horses going for meat, if there is an excess, then what else can you do. What makes it sad is when they are young healthy animals with no soundness issues but economics dictated it was more cost effect.

What supplements if any did you use? He looks a lovely sort as well.

this was freddy when i bought him, he was 23 and about to be sold on to a dealer (i just imagined him being passed arround from sale to sale till he met his end in the slaughter house). he was owned by the lady i ust to work for and, after throwing a huge tantrum to hubbie, he agreed i could have him.

this is freddy 6 months befor i had to have him PTS . we had him 4 years and he was my pony of a lifetime. RIP old man.

when i tried my boy he looked like this bolted flat out 2 circuits out of control(only reason my dad gave in was because he though he 'looked cool' little non-horsey parents!), tb ex-racer never retrained properly.

this was about 2 month later

so proud of him such a star! a year on and he's still the best horse in the world

Both horses in my signature were acquired as I felt sorry for them....

The chesnut, marcus, was an Intermediate eventer who needed a quieter life and was free as he was really cold-backed. Sadly he had been completely overridden and had numerous joint and back problems so he had a few months spoilt rotten in a lush field and was then PTS.

Wills was at a dealer with a horrendous reputation and was standing leaning his head on the wall refusing to look at anyone. He was a slug to ride and box walked when he saw his tack but he was definitely worth it - the pics show what a character he is now he's come out of his shell! :D:D

This is mine;

She had lice, worms, a foot abcess (sp) and no fat.

This is her a few weeks later;

However, I'm not sure he is getting as good as treatment here, everytime I go to the field he is playing dead :mad: :p

(ps. I know he is ribby, a work in progress)
