LEZ How wrong - Any help or advice pls

What really gets me is that everyone I know has sold their lorries which they only used once or twice a month and traded them and their normal cars for 4x4s which they then use daily and trailers to be compliant. Surely its more emmissions friendly to have an occassional use lorry and a car than a 4x4 that you are using for your everyday journeys.
I hated my trailer so just bought a lorry last week and it cost loads but I had no choice because of the lez!

Hi Oz, :) just a guess but I would imagine your mum's campervan would be in the 1.02/3.5 tonne category, which would be non compliant, unless reg. after Jan '02. And possibly the older VW that you checked was petrol, or reg. pre Jan 1973 in which case it's exempted as a vintage/historical vehicle. My friend has one of those Shogun animal thingys, you know the crew cab with a pick up bit at the back, that's non compliant as it's over 1.02 ton, although it's '51 reg. I believe that Discos have the same engines as Defenders but due to being lighter they are compliant. I sold my Daf two years ago, totally gutted me, and bought a petrol TK. Even though I actually learned to drive in a TK back in the 70s and have owned 6 of them over the years, after the luxury of the Daf's light steering and tiny turning circle I hated it, so sold it and got a Disco and trailer... and I hate towing!

Why is your 4track in it Lisa? My Disco isn't!

Possibly because it has only 2 seats so is registered as a van! I bought it from a landscaper who converted it - thinking the open back would be great for tack / water etc at shows and feedbarn trips. Obviously not a good move after all!

Or it could be the age / engine size. Who knows - seems like pot luck as to whether you end up with a non compliant vehicle!!

Someone 'up norf' will get a great deal on my car when I sell it!!

I agree with you total, how comes they do not see it. Like you I hated towing and as did my horse.

According to the TFL website, light 4x4 vehicles classified as cars are exempt, those classified as commercial vehicles are not:

There are many types of light 4x4 utility vehicle. It is their classification (decided by the manufacturer and the European Union) that determines whether they're affected by the LEZ or not.

Light 4x4 utility vehicles classed as cars are not affected by the LEZ. Those classed as commercial vehicles are subject to the LEZ. This can be found on a VSC registration certificate under 'Body Type.'

Any vehicle designed to carry goods, or more than nine passengers, is classed as a commercial vehicle, even it's only used for recreational purposes. These include:

All models of pick-up vehicles, including dual cab pick-ups
Commercial or 'panel van' variants of light utility vehicles (these can be identified by having a goods-carrying capacity in place of seating and metal panels in place of windows)
Light utility vehicles that have more than 8 passenger seats

I have done a check of my Monterey and thankfully panic over, as it is classified as a car, it is exempt

Sue C have you thought about swapping your horsebox body onto a different chassis, older or newer depending on your budget?

Yes but I think it will be just as dear as paying the £4000, I think my best option is to try and find an old one and do it up, mind you they are not easy to find

I looking out for one for you :) Vicky with Billy aksed me to keep an eye out and Im goin to ask the guy we bought our box from to look around as he does up horseboxes and says that has had alot of older boxes but as he is based in Somerset with no LEZ noone wants them so they get scrapped! Fingers crossed :)

Me a snob, I wish I a poor horse owner. You are right might try that. have sent him a link to this thread so perhaps he is just reading it all LOL

Update got a letter back from my local MP, funny enough nothing he can do, but he did write to me, While Ken is probably still laughing, wonder if a pile of poo at his front door would help, while I can still drive in the ZONE !!!!!!!!:D

Aperently the city of Aberdeen is thinking of adopting the LEZ idea too so maybe us northeners
shouldent be so smug , anyway in london if you get a 2012 lez complyant euro 4 lorry it will only be ok until 2016!!! so be carefull before spending on a new chassis or box

I'm with you on this! Fortunately for me our yard has 2 exits... The best one I cannot use as brings me out onto an LEZ road whereas the other way doesn't! The madness is that the LEZ way which I cannot use is about 1/2 mile until am free from it and doesn't pass ANY houses whereas the LEZ free way takes me past LOADS!!! I'm just hoping they don't extend the area as then we will be b@ggered too........ It's madness when we already pay tax on our fuel and it is THAT money which should be used as "green" money as then you are paying for how much emissions you are actually giving out. ie a vehicle used once a fortnight is in no way going to harm the planet as much as a vehicle being used daily. (unless said vehicle is electric)!

I know it is so wrong. Does anyone know how you can find out where the cameras are? Do you think a petition would help:confused:
No I think its just something you have to work round!!!, old lorry, new lorry, passinger 4x4 and trailer, or sell up and move somewhere out side of the m25... Its just how things are, our family had a large house in west kensington sold up.. and moved to cheshire..london nice to visit but a dump to live and work in unless you are very rich... IMHO
