I was wondering what the lifespan on turnout rugs is?

It was a mad random thought this morning but I have 3 lightweight turnouts, 2 leak like sieves and the 3rd I thought was quite robust..... that is until the rain in Essex last night. The "robust" one is about 6 years old.

I have no idea what to do with the "old leaky" turnouts.... should I try and get them reproofed or should I donate them to the dogs as dog bed as it seems such a waste to put them in the bin when there is nothing wrong with them as rugs persay just that they are no longer waterproof

why not get the seams waxed and reproof the rugs? If you look after them, they should last for ever.

I used to have one (till it got trashed on a midnight rampage) that was over 20 years old, one of the old traditonal canvas ones. If you look after them.. and so does your ned, theres no reason why they wont last 10/15 yers.

It depends on the rug IMO. Polyester (usually cheaper) TOs seem to loose their waterproof properties pretty quickly even if reproofed. For this reason I usually stick with Rambos which are made of nylon. Although they are more expensive, they seem to be far more hardwearing and I have some ancient Rambos that are still going strong.

I tend to just bin old TOs that are no longer waterproof - although it's useful to have a spare in the lorry in case you get a quick shower at a show. Other than that, I take all of the clips, straps etc off (as they can be so useful for other things, repairs etc) and then stick them in the rubbish.

Think we must have had one of our rambos for about 10 years now, and for the last 3-4 years its been worn pretty much 24/7 during winter. It gets washed/reproofed maybe every few years?

We did have lots of good solid old style (ie heavy!) canvas rugs, but they all got stolen a few years ago. Its taken a while to build our 'stock' up again, but now all we have is nice light nylon rugs - not all rambos sadly!!

I agree totally, polyester rugs never last, but I have had Rambos for years that never leaked, then sold them because they did not fit my current horse. IMO reproofing is a waste of time and money. It does not work on polyester rugs and is not needed for nylon ones - never reproofed mine and they never leaked.

I think the two leaky ones are polyester, one is a loveson and the other is a masta....so it is looking ilke I should take the clips etc off and donate them to the dogs then!

I've got a 15yr old Rambo that is still ok.
Recently, I've been buying cheaper rugs - Weatherbeetas, as I've had two rapidly growing youngsters. I find that they only really last two winters before either the outer surface is so worn that they don't reproof properly, or the wadding inside starts to break up and fall down inside the rug.
I posted a thread on Rambos a day or so ago, and following the responses, I think I'm going to splash out on either Rambo or Fal - they'll be cheaper in the long run.

Still use a 12yo Masta, 10yo Mark Todd and 5yo Loveson all still fine - just get reproofed with Nikwax and good as new - never had one leak yet - other than a Rambo at 2yo!

Hope you sent the Rambo back - they have a 3 year guarantee!

Wow- my rugs only ever last 2 years before they have ripped or no longer been waterproof- even after been sent to tack shop for re proofing! Wish I could get them to last 6 years!
always budget £120/ year for new rugs.
Tried Rambo-fab till ripped, weatherbeeta, masta mark todd etc.
