So it's my fillies 1st birthday next week and I would love to get her some 'toys' she already has several treat balls and jolly balls that she doesn't use, she is very food orientated.
I've researched quite a bit and I can't find anything that says whether yearlings can have likits or not. I'm just concerned about the amount of molasses in them as she is stabled at night and I don't want her getting too chubby.
I've read a few conflicting things about salt licks so I'm a little reluctant to get her one.
She loves the good old carrot/apple on a string but that lasts her about 5 seconds haha 😂
I just wanna know if anyone knows of some kind of stable lick/toy or has any ideas of something that has a minimal amount of molasses but will still keep my little angel occupied.
Thanks in advance guys!!

Im not a fan of likits in general...pure sugar. Totally unnecessary. You could freeze a tub of water with some flavoring in it and a few carrots/apples/treats etc in it..it will keep her occupied as long as it lasted.

Hang an empty mineral water bottle up, she will enjoy batting that about. Makes a lot of noise. Salt lick would be good. Lickit complete no no.

I wouldn't give one to any horse, let alone a yearling. A swede on a string in the middle of the stable, so she can't trap it against the wall and bite lumps from it would be better.

agreed :) I also think that most horses are more than happy with a good stock of hay or haylage and they don't get bored eating the same thing day after day, like we do :wink3:

Swede on a string is good fun, a watermelon can be fun for them to roll around and take chunks out of. A rolling treat ball filled with something low calorie/sugar like haycobs always goes down well. A vitamunch net was a favourite of mine as a foal. Carrots hidden in the hay net, flavoured ice with bits of fruit/veggies in, could freeze it in an icecream tub? I even hung up a few rope dog toys for mine to chew on, she particularly liked a huge 6ft one I bought and hung over her stable door! Lots of options really :)

For what it's worth, mine had the odd likkit, uncle jimmys licky things etc as a foal/yearling. Didn't do her any harm as a rare treat, and worked as a great bribe/pleasent reward for unpleasant things. She often had a salt lick available but apart from the first few times she had access, she lost interest quickly. Now a days I just add salt to her feed.
