Listening to music while riding

There is a time and a place for music and its not when riding.Stay alert at all times and whats going on in your surroundings.Respect your horse and its safety.
You can put your ear plugs in when you get home.
 
I’m surprised so many people think you can’t concentrate and stay alert with a bit of music playing. Do you turn the car radio off when you are driving?
I am not focused on the podcast, in fact, I sometimes have to re listen to it at a later date coz I’ve not taken it in. But I find the background noise helpful.
 
People listening to music via phone speakers in the arena drives me absolutely insane. Concentrate on riding!

I absolutely hate getting intermittent tinny blasts of their music.

I was going to say the same! Or have a conversation with a hacking buddy as you ride along?
 
I don'[t listen to music / podcasts when riding but I do when I'm running. I can't wear in-ear speakers as they hurt like hell and I'm increasingly uncomfortable about wearing over-the-ear ones as they block out other noise (I tend to put one behind my ear so I only have one ear blocked out). I've been thinking about getting some bone conductor ones - you place them behind your ears and they conduct the sound through the bone so your ears are free for other sounds. The way they work also means you're not polluting anyone else's airwaves. Decent ones are expensive but you can get some ok ones -pretty cheaply - about £20.

Ooh do you have a link to £20 ones that are usable? I had the decent ones (Christmas present) and have lost them! Which is annoying!!
 
I play music on my phone using the speaker when I'm schooling indoors in the winter evenings. The yard can be very quiet, so any noise sound loud and spooky. Having the background music means neither of us jumps when the sheep baa, of a car, turns up etc. I only do it when no one else is in the school. If we're sharing, the other horses moving around provides the same effect as the music.
 
Yes I normally have something in one ear when I’m riding. It used to be music before my accident but now it’s just a episode of whatever box set I’m on with Amazon prime or an audio book as back round noise whilst I ride. Helps keep my hyper awareness in check and stops it rolling over into red alert all the time.
 
I listen to podcasts more than music when out and about, an earbud in one ear means you can still hear plenty. Still get to appreciate plenty of natural sights and sounds ;) I do like riding to music though, the competitions I've enjoyed the most have been freestyles.. it's magic when your horse's footfalls match the beat.
 
On lone rides I always have iTunes in pocket. No buds so me and horse can both enjoy but low volume so as not to upset anyone else. We ride in stunning scenery and I find addition of music enhances experience. Also find it relaxes tense/spooky horses (probably because it relaxes rider). Not all horses like music or some types of music though - you have to discover their personal tastes!
