Seven year old Traditional cob. We've owned him for four years. Never sick nor sorry 'till this year when he tied up March/April time, got over that and then had two bouts of lameness.

Could not get to the root of the lameness, so went to the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket last Wednesday.

Got the results today...

Two issues:
One - neurological, but cannot pinpoint (x-rayed neck and back);
Two - sacroilliac joint problem. There was uptake on the scintography and his action points to it.

Just had a three day Bute trial. Results:
Better forward movement on both reins in walk and trot, canter still an issue;
Still the strange action behind (think constipated cow hind leg action);
Off-hind toe dragging worse than when off the Bute.

Prognosis:
Will be on Bute (or Danilon) for rest of life, probably;
Might be a light hack: walk and trot only, no fast work, no jumping. Will have to be on Bute, with the attendent potential issues that brings;
Might get worse. Don't know as do not know what 'it' is, or rather, what 'they' are.

Action:
Get him home;
Find a field so he can be on 24/7/365 turnout. If we can't find a field round here, send to a friend and have him on grass livery for six months and see what happens.

Daugher is in tears. We all knew she'd outgrown him, but he is hers and she is his. We know it could be so much worse, but at the moment... :(

I'm going to share Dizzy with her. She can treat Dizz as hers until she gets another horse. No idea when that will be, need to get head round this first.

So thank you for all your kind thoughts and wishes.

Oh poo hun. I had so hoped for better news.
2010 has been an utterly pants year all round.
Hugs for you and your daughter. I know how we felt with Sidney so I completely understand.
If you want a vent then PM me any time.

So sorry to hear this. Vibes for finding a suitable field. At least when you find a house with land you will know that he will be able to go with you and his herd. You can at least think (trying to find a positive here!) that D1 won't feel any pressure to sell/loan him to any-one else as he is outgrown.

Thank you all.

We always thought LC would stay at home, with maybe a part-time sharer (though D1 would be a hard task master), but that he would go out for a blast and generally get out and about. D1 was looking forward to going cross-country - his new cross-country boots are still in their wrapping.

At least he will be home, one day, when we get our own place. D1 and he play together in the field, so they will still have that.

I'm holding onto the hope here that 'it' isn't something that is going to deteriorate...

Really sorry MrsM - I really hoped there would be better news for you.
Hugs for your daughter and for better luck in the future.

Oh no Mrs M........ D1 is not the only one crying about LC.......I am so so so sorry, sending you huge massive loads of hugs to you D1 Dizz and LC.

Dunno what to say.........

So sorry Mrs M

My mares prognosis after sacroiliac diagnosis was £300 steroid injections into area approx 3 times a year to keep her in work. She had been for sale anyway as I wasn't keeping her.

I gave her yesterday to someone who loves the bones of her (for £1!). She is going to try and keep her in work and see how she goes. Or she'll just be loved forwever. She's only 5.

She wasn't my beloved horse (as such), but it was an awful week last week, so I can only imagine what you're going through.

Big hug for your daughter!

Mrs M-if it wasn't for bad luck you would have none at all!
I really admire your spirit, you are a stronger person then most!
I really hope that this is one of those wonderful cases where in 6 months time you will be telling us that LC is getting better after his break.
Hugs is all I have to offer, and some Hot Chocolate!
x

I'm holding onto the hope here that 'it' isn't something that is going to deteriorate...

When Sid was diagnosed we were told he would deteriorate very quickly and we'd be lucky to give him a year before we had to pts.
That was two years ago.
We took him back to the vets a month ago and whilst the x-ray of his foot is so bad they want to use it for teaching purposes - his foot is literally disintegrating inside, and the trainee vets view was he should be on three legs (they would not believe he was the big black horse that was trotting up outside only 1/5th lame) he is still field sound, hoons about like a loon and not on any drugs.
We don't know how long he's got left but we are living a year at a time with him.

So moral of this story is even if they give you bad news about Little cobs future it depends on him. Sid should still not be here but he's raising hell and proving the vets totally wrong. Hold on to that hun xx

Im so sorry MrsM, I really hope he improves on bute and rest. Thoughts go out to you and D1, he's so lucky to be with you all who will look after him x
