I am a university student and am writing my master's thesis on the names of bits. For this, I try to find out what do people actually call different bits (as it doesn't really matter what names are used in books if no-one actually uses those names). You can help me by filling my questionaire, it will take about 5-10 minutes and would be highly appreciated.

Not enough space to answer why use the chosen bit!
Ditto this! Actually quite enjoyed doing that. Terminology of bits is quite a favourite subject of mine, get quite irate when people get the terms wrong - but is there a right or wrong hey? Good luck with your project!

3bh: that's so true. We all like to think we are the one who is correct and that's definitely the biggest thing I have been struggling with when working on this because what I thought correct might not actually be what majority thinks is correct. And if wanting to change the way people talk about things, I have to have a little bit better reasons than just "I think it's better".

I'm sorry there is too little room for answer in the last part. Unfortunately it cannot be changed now that the questionaire has been published.

Thank you again for replies.

Done but couldn't put all bits used and reasons as not enough space! Put the two most used bits though and tried to bullet point why.

Done - I enjoyed it too :) could we have results once you've looked at them please? Sounds interesting.

Also didn't have enough room in the "why" section!

Done but I wanted to elaborate on bit 7 (the bradoon and the weymouth) as there is more to say about them than that and there was no space.

And I called all the rubber snaffles happy mouth because that's what they looked like (had bobbles over the tongue) but but obviously that is a brand name

O and I filled in why I used one bit but I have two horses so horse 2) has no reason. Sorry, I ran out of space.

Will you be posting answers? Want to know if I got the gag bit right. I sometimes mix up Balding and Cheltenham gags. :o
