Madhector's post in the gallery reminded me about this. Oliver's a liver chestnut isn't he?

DSC02016.jpg

Only a friend of mine suggested he can't be a liver chestnut as he has a black mane and tail. Is this true? If he's not a LC, what colour would he be as I can't think of any other colour to describe him.

Awwww what a lovely pony! Thanks Madhector.

Apparently my friend has only ever seen liver chestnuts have a chestnut coloured mane and tail and said that she doesn't think Oliver is true to the colour. When I asked her what colour she thought Oliver was then, she shrugged and said she'd no idea!

Edited to add...

Mind you she did say he'd look bay if he had black legs. Bit like saying a dun would look like a palamino if they had a blonde mane/tail.

Flash's mane was quite dark, but he was registered as a liver chestnut, if you looked very closely it was a mixture of black and brown hairs

edited to add... everytime you post pics of your chap it reminds me of Flash, they are very similar

If I knew how to get a pic of my boy onto this forum I'd show you a really good example of a true liver chestnut Section D. He has a liver chestnut mane, same as his coat colour and a stunning tail in shades of flaxen, chestnut and liver chestnut. It always looks as if I have spent hours colouring and crimping his tail but HTG thats just how it grows out of his bum! Have seriously thought of snipping it off him and getting a wig made! I wouldn't have called either of the above 2 horses liver chestnut but hey what do I know??? They're fab whatever their colour xxx

If you wouldn't mind indulging me, what colour would you call my daughter's pony then?

I would say he is definately liver chestnut. Is his mane and tail tinged with reddy colour highlights? or is it completely black?

In all honesty, his tail and mane aren't actually black. They're a dark brown and yes they do have reddish brown highlights running through them, more noticeable in his tail.

Another pic, probably shows his colour off better

Only pic I have, close up, of his tail but I think you can see some of the lighter coloured hairs running through it.

I have to agree with Sunnymum, he doesnt look liver chestnut to me either.
However pics can sometimes be misleading.
Does he have any black hairs at all on his legs..just above the white?
No matter what colour he is stunning!

He doesn't really look liver chestnut to me either.....

Not sure if you can see but Ty's mane is just a bit darker than his body colour......he probably has very dark brown in there too but it's not black

your boys mane and tail don't look black - they look dark liver chestnut.......

Ok.....so his mane is dark liver chestnut, but he isn't liver chestnut?

I don't mind that people don't think he is that colour, I'd just like them to tell me what colour they would class him as instead?

He has no black hairs on his legs at all, to answer someone else's question.

When I looked at the photo properly he doesn't seem to have black mane and tail so IS liver chestnut!

my friends pony is lc.when she was young she went darker in the summer and paler shade in the winter.now she is near 30 its the other way around.

Murphy is liver chestnut and at first glance looks as if he has a black mane and tail, but if you look closely it is actually loads of different colours from red chestnut through to black. His body is virtually the same colour as Olivers.

think he is liver chestnut. My boy has a quite dark mane but still with lots of red in it and his tail is almost red salt n pepper

(excuse the size of him, he was a very fat 3 1/2 year old!!)

p.s click on pics to make them bigger
