We had results from Andy's bloods and found out he has liver problems.

Vet didn't say anymore but is coming back to do more bloods and tests. Glad it's not ulcers though.

Just wondering what does he mean by 'liver problems' my initial thought was ragwort poisoning but I hope it's not this. Please tell me somthing else he may have wrong.

You're joking! what awful luck you're having :(

I have no idea what 'liver problems' could be but i really hope it's nothing serious

try and stay positive. I've 99.9% sure that the liver is an organ that as long as it's not damaged beyond repair can rejuvinate itself.....

all i know of liver problems is when my horse had liver fluke, he had it quite bad and basically everytime he gets an infection/illness it reduces the function of the liver even more.

we (vets and myself) put his healthy liver at just over half, we've seen how an illness wipes him out when with most horses it will be no problem.

he's been on milk thistle up until the last year or so and it did seem to help him out but then lots of other problems meant he was on so many other things that he wouldn't eat his feed so i stopped with it.

but having liver problems could be anything, maybe he had an illness long before you got him and it affected his liver and it just never had a chance to repair itself before you've had the bloods done.
just to add, to diagnose the liver fluke my horse had a liver biopsy, there was no doubt after that!

I don't think it's too serious as vet isn't coming to Wednesday, if it was serious he would be coming sooner.

It just sucks, just as everything is going brill this happens.

Also we're wonderinf whether the toxins that were in Koko's field may have infected Andy's field and this is him getting the toxins out of his body now he's on non-contaminated ground.

When Yan was around 30, she started dropping weight, and had a horrible skin infection. She had a blood test and the vet said her liver wasn't functioning correctly - can't remember the technical terms. I started to give Yan Milk Thistle in her feed, and she never had this problem again. Might be worth a try for Andy :)

What awful bad luck. Sounds like Milk Thistle would be a good thing to try. If you dont mind me asking what toxins were found on the pasture?

Aw Poor Andy, hope its not serious!! Did you not move yards? Think i remember reading you did but my mind could be playing tricks on me :p

I think a lot of liver issues, if caught early enough can be managed. My pony developed liver issues (presenting as photosensitisation) after he was on bute for spavin for a sustained period. We took him off the bute (this was many years ago before the side effects were really known) and he improved. I think nowadays too there are plenty of supplements and a lot more knowledge so hopefully Andy will be able to be treated and should manage.

there has been a hell of a lot of liver fluke around this year, we've hasd a few horses come to us with fluke. Once treated the horses picked up quickly and are fine now. Worth treating for as it is hard to diagnose.

Friends horse has had liver problems and it makes him very lethargic and photo sensitive where he has white skin. From what you have posted he is not lethargic so fingers crossed it is not as bad and has been caught early enough.

Sorry to hear this - but to put a positive spin on things, my mare has 30% liver function remaining- you would not know it to look at her- I simply manage it with diet- as others have said milk thistle is good - but also yesac- you can use both together- also get him on a low protein diet - I use absoloutely no oil.

As a result of the liver problems my mare drinks hell of a lot of a water which is a good thing. Hopefully things will get better xx

Hiyya not really sure why this has been resurrected :p up but in the most recent bloods we had done they were perfect and whatever problem he had is now gone. :)

What we think is he was very slightly poisoned from the bad pasture at my old yard (although not the same field which killed my old horse) and after moving yards over time gradually his bloods were coming back cleaner. Our vet thinks if we kept him at our old yard any longer he could have gone the same way as my old horse which would have been heartbreaking. :(
