Livery yard price increases

Thats expensive for grass livery! I pay £80 a month for grass livery hay is on top of that.

I pay £11 a week for grass livery for my retired mare and £35 a week DIY for my ridden horse, plus an additional straw charge paid all year round.

That's not relevant though, livery prices are very variable depending on area, the cost of land, the amount of grass etc etc

The yard I'm at has gone up too and I have had to move.

Prices billed monthly. Based Surrey Hills. About average for the area.

Grass went from £250-£270 last year
DIY is £325 going up to £350 inc hay and either bring in or turnout
Part gone from £490-510 no riding, grooming, or poo picking included.
Full was £600 no idea now.

DIY livery £20 to £30 a week. very cheap. the livery yard owners are either running at a loss or just breaking even with poor quality fencing etc. Just try buying your own place and doing your own fencing and repairs DIYers and find out just how much it does cost to do it properly.

Nice to find a like minded person like me. Do you photograph everything Chocolate??? we do with every improvement a before during and after, and have a improvement page on our website so people can see the change. One thing I learnt recently is that the website needs to change frequently and new things added to keep it interesting. I was watching a website program they were saying to keep up with the change is to keep your website fresh and newly updated. It also provides liveries with information that we are continually improving things


Like you chocolate we all do improvements all the time not like other yards around us.

We are currently re doing all our fencing to 4 x 2 rails and 4 rails high (like USA) stronger and more secure.

Also other improvements we have brought is show jumps all poly ones


also on the agenda this year is to finish selling all the wooden jumps and buy poly jumps cross country ones.


Also we have brought:

grass dressage arena and markers
rubber matting all stables
stable mirrors
arena mirrors
outside folding saddle racks outside each stable
concreted the whole courtyard from gravel
resurfaced both schools
new wrought iron gates and brick pillars from the old field gate
new stable block roofing
and the list goes on

Agree totally but I tend to just tell my clients what we will be doing next which I know they appreciate. Have some before and after pics of stable blocks. We knocked everything down last year and now have a fab new American barn with very fancy stables. We are improving all the time and you're right, the list is never ending!! Next on list is hot wash when uhh cu I have just had an eye watering quote of 1k for (due to shear amount of cabling) followed by a solarium. Some of our fencing needs upgrading too so that's on the list as well. Yep, never never ends that list!

I think a lot of people are missing the point the OP is making.

She is not begrudging the YO a fair living, but pointing out that in her area the cost of the livery was already at the top of the market - obviously she has chosen the yard and was happy to pay until now.

However, she is now concerned that the price rise this year is much higher than she could have reasonably anticipated and she is not sure she can afford it as it is not budgeted for.

I'm sure many of would agree that an £52 a month would be hard to find

We knocked everything down last year and now have a fab new American barn with very fancy stables. We are improving all the time and you're right, the list is never ending!! Something of a sweeping generalisation there I think! Where I am is sub 30 per week, 36+ horses, farm run so minimal staff costs, fences are perfection and mended when damaged promptly, muck heap managed, own hay and straw made now I'm Pretty sure the owner is not running at a loss, it's not a hobby for him!

I think what the new price that the OP is paying is perfectly reasonable, but I also sympathize because I can understand that the sudden increase probably came as a bit of a shock! It's no good listening to people who say they pay £15 for grass livery and feeling hard done by in comparison - every area is different and grass livery can be very hard to come by in some places!
