I am considering loaning my big lad. I can't ride due to my health and am under strict instructions from the hospital not to for at least the next 6 months. So was thinking rather than sell him as i know i will struggle to replace such a good horse i could loan him out. I would want him to stay at my current yard, it has all the best facilities and he is very happy. I would cover the cost of his hay/feed and bedding. So all loaner would pay for is his livery. He is currently on part livery and that works out to £200 a calendar month, this can be altered to DIY or full with money being changed either way. The loaner would only have to to go to the yard once a day. He is a great show jumper with BS winnings of over £200, he has won CT, Dressage, XC, arena eventing and is a fantastic hunter. There is excellent hacking and he is 100% in traffic and someone at the yard to give lessons if needed. The loaner would be able to do all of these things with him. He has the best tack, rugs etc so everything is there. There would be no further cost except for any competing they did.

What do you think?

Would you continue to insure him?
He sounds fabulous! Sure some lucky person will snap your hand off. Hope you feel better soon xx.

i think some one who is capable of having their own horse but maybe lacking funds to buy one upfront would jump at an opportunity like this - its very generous of you to still supply hay/bedding ect! but would the loan only be for 6months or more long term - 6months may suit some one on their gap year or summer holidays from college uni but may put others off - if it was more long term i don't see any reason why you wouldn't get any interest - i would be interested if i were in that position!!

Sounds fine to me, especially the option of changing to either diy or full. Sure you'll have no trouble finding a loaner.

please check it more before you make the decision

Not sure what you mean?

Yes i would continue to pay his insurance?

Would be for a minimum of 6 months, but quite happy to do 12 months, and then review.

Sounds good to me but make sure you have a signed legally binding contract with new loaner which covers absolutely everything

I've just started part loaning my mare out so i can spend more time working on my boy, she stays where she is, i pay £100 a month for her livery (includes hay and straw), plus hard feed and front shoes. I charge the girl £50.....i dont charge much as I still ride her, compete her and even though i said the girl can compete her occasionally and come along when i take my lad. I also agreed to do it cheaper as i trust her, it will help keep my mare fitter (so helps me out) and i'd rather have her long term than decide she cant afford it after a few months. The girl is only 14 but she's brilliant with my mare and always lets me know her plans.

If i was to loan her out fully, i'd ask £100 a month to stay at my yard. I think someone would snap your lad up, just be careful in finding the right person, otherwise he could be ruined/overworked/over jumped etc.

The girl part loaning mine is 14 as i said so dont neccersarily cancel out youngsters, i wouldnt of loaned her to anyone else! x

The main reason for keeping him at current yard is because YO is a friend and i know she will keep an eye on things to make sure he is not doing anything he shouldn't. They would be feeding him and fetching him in and turning him out, etc.

The yard is lovely, we have a walker, nice school, good turnout and miles of off road hacking. So they have all the facilities they could want, plus they can compete him.

I can't ride, so there would be no worry of me suddenly saying i want him back. I have a long way to go before i am fit enough to do anything!
