'Long lines are cruel' Grrrrr

I just got home after a lovely walk with my little hairy monster and I am absolutely livid!!

B is walked on a longline despite having decent recall. We have recently moved and we are now SURROUNDED by sheep so I do not trust her 100% yet.

B was having a good hoon with her ball when I saw a man approaching so I called her back and waited for him to pass. The toss pot swiftly informed me that I shouldnt have a dog if I cannot control it and that it is cruel for her to never be able to run around freely :( He was quite intimidating and I know he wouldnt have said a thing if OH had been with me.

I told him he was entitled to his opinion and marched off with B (For once in her little life she didnt pull my arm off!:rolleyes:)

This encounter has completely ruined my day, I do my best by all animals in my care and would never comprimise their welfare in any way, then this big pig headed bloke decides to pick on me while im trying to enjoy time with my puppy. :mad::mad:

Sorry for the rant! It's my day off and I am just so angry! I hate that I look so young and pathetic as apparently men only like to spout off at young girls.

On the plus side.. B was very well behaved and stopped pulling after the first 5 - 10 mins of being out (This is a BIG improvement!) and she even completely ignored a horse + rider (She is fine with horses but doesnt quite understand why there is a person up there and why they are not fussing her!)

I would have offered giant choc buttons for reading my rant... but i ate them all :o
 
Maybe they are but (in the grand scheme of things) a shot dog and a field full of dead sheep, or a car accident, badly injured or dead driver and a squashed dog would be crueller, no?

I know only too well the problems you can have when you don't properly stock-break a dog :( and the retraining process (in my case) was probably 4 times as long as the initial stock training would have been so i think you are absolutely doing the right thing by your dog in stock training him. On the other hand I would rather my dogs were put down than never allowed to run free in the long term because i think that makes up a huge part of their quality of life and I find it very sad that many dogs don't seem to get any regular free running time.

That said, for a complete stranger to come up to you and criticise you like this is bl**dy rude and you were far more restrained than I would have been :o Is it just me or is there a lot of this about at the moment?
 
There do seem to be a lot of big men having a go at girls on their own around at the moment, don't there? Do you think there has been an outbreak of small-williy-itis?:confused:
 
My new girl is walked on a long line cos her recall is bad, she is so easily distracted by scents she could be off and having just lost her for 3 weeks i'm taking no risks. I've never had anyone say i'm being cruel though.
 
Mine will continue to stay on extending leads when I'm not 100% certain they're safe or that they'll come back and I don't care what any bugger else thinks. I know how to use an extending lead properly, my dogs have good recall (although Jack does it in his own damn time :p) and they're fit, active and happy so :p
 
Small-willy-itis must be very common around here, I seem to bump into sufferers far too often.

I would rather have B on a long line than under a car / horse / chasing sheep, she has decent recall but its not 100% yet. She is allowed free run in certain big fields at work / my parents house and is allowed off lead to play with some of her older and wiser friends, they keep her out of trouble!
 
He'd have a fit if he ever met us out walking, what with our many long line/flexi/waist belt combinations that ensure she is never, ever off lead (with the exception of carefully scouted out securely fenced fields, of which I am lucky to have access to several).

I'd introduce him to my friend who cannot talk about her last sibe without bursting into tears, even several years later - he ran off and ended up on the road several miles away, under the wheels of a 44 tonner.

I'd much, much rather go to the inconvenience of using a long line (and let's face it, did he think you were using it just for fun, they're a pain in the arse in wet weather like this :p) and the trouble of finding alternative ways to exercise a dog than risk one being shot or run over.
 
Well, you must be kind to sufferers of this debilitating condition. Of course, you could point out that there are several devices available online which claim to combat this problem... I think most of them involve heavy weights and string...

They are cruel to humans!
Forgot my gloves yesterday, Pip took hers through muddy water, unmentionable piles, nettles, and a thorny bush. My hands were sore and swollen, cold and wet, stung and scratched when we got home. Much cruelty! :D

When he saw me I will have been covered in muddy stripes from being semi tangled in a muddy line, muddy hands and splashes on my face from managing to flick myself in the face with it :rolleyes: Yes.... I'm sure I looked like I was having so much fun!
 
Thats the thing about owning dogs. You have to have a tough skin because there will always be a multitude of people that disagree with you. This kind of stuff runs off my back now.
 
"God damn it" why do people never approach me with such stupid comments:mad: I would never have given him the pleasure of a "thats your opinion" I would have "unleashed, myslef, not the dog and give him a right old gob full in the hope he would retaliate and we could have a full on scrap:D
I need to change my walk routes:p
