Long riding boots?

I posted the other day about chaps as I have not long bought some new short riding boots and would like some nice leather chaps.

But I got to thinking maybe I could get some nice long boots instead.

Problem is, last time I wore long boots I found it *cough* difficult to get on... a *cough* 14hh pony (I am 5ft6+)

And then found them a little uncomfortable to ride in too but I just put that down to being used to have so much ankle space with short boots and chaps. (Plus, they weren't mine - I was borrowing them)

So I was going to take a look around at some nice long boots and try some on in tack shops etc, but I don't know where to start!!





So would all you lovely HHOers like to help me?

What long boots do you have? How much were they? (if you don't mind saying

) Where did you get them from? Are they comfortable?

I'm mainly looking for some that are comfy and nice looking, leather, that allow me to move my ankle similarly to how I can with short boots and chaps.

Any ideas would be fabb

Ariat - not sure what they are called but the ones with laces down the side (no zip) they are great, doesn't matter how big (cough) your legs are, and no problem getting your feet in!

Really comfy.
 
Another vote for Ariat Bromonts here - got mine in the Derby House sale a while ago for £140 - so if you decide to get them and can wait for a bit, shop around! I think because they have summer and winter versions you are more likely to get a bargain when they are 'out of season'

depends if you need them for show use or just riding at home - if just riding at home I love my Dublin River boots...I end up wearing them all the time!! They are very comfy and very soft so easy to move (and get on!) in. They're about 100 quid. The waterproofing isn't great but I spray mine with waterproofing spray every so often.

What's your budget? For around £100 you can get the Regent pro-rustler ranch riders which are really really comfy and come in lots of width options. I've had mine for two years now and they've sagged in all the right places are are like foot gloves now, lol.

For about £120 you can get the Mark Todd long leather boots which have always had good reports on here - my pair is arriving tomorrow morning so I may have to do a report once they've arrived!

When I first got mine - 6 years ago!! I struggled to get on anything, because the leather hadn't given, they were also crippling to walk in. Now they are very much well worn in, they are sooooo comfy - getting on will get easier in time!!
 
Do you want smart ones for competing or everyday comfy ones for general riding? My Harry Hall Faro boots are sooo comfy and loads of ankle room. They also have good treads underneath for walking around the yard and are warm in Winter but cool in summer. You probably couldn't wear them to a competition though, although you might get away with them for jumping if you don't go anywhere too posh! THey cost about £65. I'm on my 2nd pair in about 5 years of wearing them day in, day out.
 
I have exactly the same problem as you personally I stick with gaiters and short boots, Sergio Grasso and Tredstep make really nice ones.

Long boots wise Bromonts and Mark Todds are both really nice, I tried both but decided I scuff the toes to much!

Ariats Bromonts, I got mine for £120 inc P&P from karasel equine on EBay.....might be worth seeing if they have any for sale at the moment?

They are for shows and normal riding at home really, because I don't ride/go to the horses every single day as I don't have my own, I have wellies that I wear for 'yard use' i.e. everything other than riding, I only wear my riding boots for the actual riding, so they don't wear and tear quickly so I don't feel I need a separate pair for shows.

You could also look at second hand boots on ebay - measure your calf at the widest part and the length from the floor to the outside of your knee and ask the seller for these measurements on the boots.
I sold a nearly new pair of Regent leather boots on ebay for £65 recently and this is about the going rate.
Slightly worn ones are also more 'broken in' for all except the very fancy makes. If you get new ones, wear them around the house (try ironing in them

) to get the ankles suppled up before you try and ride in them.
