LOOK AT THIS - WOW - ITS AMAZING

Yes we can agree, actually the only reason I wrote that list is because I was asked to by cruiseline, it was written in a hurry and was not meant to be sweeping in any way, but, like you, I too feel strongly about this little mare, and have her best interests in mind.

A few replies to some of the above posters.

JM07 - "far from being "Amazing", IMO the animal should have been PTS.. "

Just curious - just wanted to clarify - assuming everything reported on this pony is true & accurate - you feel that that the medical professionals and owner involved in this case were wrong to keep the pony alive?

"how many horses/ponies "enjoy" visiting a hospital, for goodness sake???"

How many horses enjoy the job they are doing? Do some riding school ponies enjoy being jabbed in the mouth, kicked, a heavy unbalanced weight plonked on their backs time and time again and doing endless circuits of the school? Do some stallions enjoy solitary confinement? Just 2 of 100s of different scenarios. None of us truly know for sure that our own horses enjoy the jobs they do. Hopefully most of us have a good idea or at least hope that they do. I would say wandering round meeting people that want to make a fuss of you and feed you tit bits wouldn't be an unpleasant job for a pony.

Blackcob - "Afraid to say that the first picture looks awfully photoshopped - any reliable sources on the story?"

I agree it has certainly been photoshopped. Could have been to improve the background, could have been to make the whoel thing up - who knows. I don't think we can assume this is a real life story at all - Amersham should have taught us all to be wary and use common sense on what we see reported (sorry to bring up that subject again) There are pictures of this pony on the op table in the LSU report - surely the wouldn't have been taken or published if this wasn't seen as an important story for the morale of the survivors there. For the purposes of this thread I'll give this the benefit of the (huge) doubt and say I believe it all...

Dieseldog - "I can't believe an animal rescue centre let her get mauled by a pit bull in the first place."

As I read it, one woman with a farm took in loads of abandoned animals in the days following the disaster - perhaps not the brightest of moves to let the dog be around prey animals especially ones it doesn't know, but I don't think you can blame the woman for taking in who knows how many animals who had been deserted and trying to help.

SirenaXVI
"OK - here is my list

Freedom from Pain
Freedom from Thirst
Freedom from Hunger
Freedom to Gallop and Roll in the mud"

I wouldn't say the last one is a 100% necessary for a horse to have a quality of live good enough to not be pts. I have known plenty of horses who for one reason or another choose not to break into anothing above a trot. Provided that they are not in pain, what is the problem? There are horses in this world, at livery in this country who are not given turnout ever, or every other day. Its not how I would keep mine but you deal with the situation you are given. I would however say freedom to exibit natural behaviour - does the pony know its a pony? Can it groom, can it go out with other ponies etc? If it is able to exhibit other behaviours that are normal for its species then I would forgive not being able to gallop and roll (if it couldn't).

Cruiseline - "I watched a program yesterday about a lady who was dying of cancer, the only reason she got out of bed in the morning was to visit and ride her crippled horse. Her husband and the doctors said that the horse was the only reason she was still alive. The horse was on pain medication, as was she, it had the most beautiful stable, its coat was gleaming, it in fact looked a picture of health, which is more than I can say for the poor lady. Maybe 10 years earlier if someone would have said to her. You will ride your horse when it is crippled, she would have told them that she would never let her beloved horse suffer. Is she cruel to do that, I think you would have to be a cold hearted person to say she was. Circumstances they are forever changing." Sounds horrible but without knowing the full facts I won't comment

The pressure sores issue - I don't know enough on the subject but wouldn't it depend on how long the pony was putting weight on that stump and had the prosthesis on? Sounds like she has it taken off some of the time.

There have been more than enough personal attacks above, so I hope nobody reads my replies as attacks, just hopefully constructive debate

I agree the pony looks well and happy and I suppose at the end of the day that's all that matters! Just takes a little getting used to

Quite amazing, and I feel a bit mixed about it.

However, can't agree Worried1 with your comment A vet will not agree to prolong an animal's life if they believe it does not have a quality of life. The USA has more powers to seize animals than we currently do.

I think that Barbaro was a prime example of keeping a horse going which should have been euthanised immediately........

Been away working this weekend and only just back. Is it me or have some of the posts been removed? I know I posted more than once.

forum whiners whinging to Admin AGAIN!!!!

Surely if people want to get involved in a debate, THEY chose to do so. If someone has got personal with them, THEY can chose to ignore it.

I don't understand why sections have been deleted. Does this happen often.

What a shame - on closer inspection loads of posts have gone! There were some great gritty Q&A’s and debate on this contentious issue. In fact it seems what is left are some posts far closer to the knuckle than those removed.

I don’t get a great deal of time to join in these discussions but this one was highlighting some (in my opinion) really interesting and important perspectives including professional, emotional and cultural differences.

From my perspective by engaging with how different people think and act in certain circumstances helps when working with and researching equine welfare both on a domestic and international level.

The dissection of this thread is very sad.

Well I certainly didn't find anything wrong with JM07 and Tia posts that I replied to, but both theirs and mine have been removed.

Seems really strange that posts like these, that where totally on topic are removed, yet others that include personal abuse still remain on the thread?????

The mind boggles!!!

I contacted Admin to ask why my posts had been removed while others that included personal abuse still remained on the thread.

This was their reply:

When we remove posts from a thread, all posts which are further down that thread also get removed. Unfortunately it's just how the system works. As far as I am aware your threads were not specifically targeted as needing removal, they just got removed as a result of posts above them being removed. I hope this helps clarify the situation for you.

If you feel there are posts remaining on this thread which contravene the forum terms and conditions please supply me with the URLs of the individual posts in threaded mode so I can investigate your complaint.

HHO Admin

I'm not sure what posts where above mine, but I can't remember any of them being any more (potentially) offensive than the one's still on here.

maybe some threads contained "proffesional" names that were asked to be removed...or indeed contravened "t & c's" by becoming defamatory??

who knows...

They probably took my posts off, because I told HotHatz off for her spelling without knowing she - or indeed he - was dyslexic.

Oh yes, I'd forgot about those, although I can fully understand why Admin would have removed yours. It's just a pity some really interesting posts had to be deleted at the same time.
