My neighbour rather shares our pets

(with her blessing) both Popple and Dinky (the cat) come and go in her house and garden as it it were their own

However, recently her brother who was lodging moved out, her elderly father died last week

and although her son is often around in the day, he is in a band so is not always home in the evenings...

She is finding it VERY hard being in an empty house, and the other night needed me to go in with her when she got home as she was nervous

I have suggested to her rehoming an adult dog as a companion and to make her feel more safe, and she is VERY keen

The dog would have lots of company and endless love, as myself and her son are around in the day and her and my mother in the evenings (we have a gap in the hedge of our gardens and out households sort of merge

). Her and her son used to take Puppy, and now Popple for lots of walks and he takes Pops to play football

So exercise and company is not a problem at all, we are well equipped...

We would really like an adult dog that doesn't need exhausting constantly (no collies!) but one that is still active for lots of walks and playing ball with Popple

So they must be friendly with other dogs, and cats. We would like something medium size, and pref smooth coat - i.e a lab cross sort of thing. The doggie must be sociable and not the nervy type as the son has music students he teaches from their home, and they have a lot of guests.

No bull breeds please. A "family" type dog. We are in Cambridge and would really like one nearby as she doesn't drive, so I would be taking her, and I am incredibly busy with rowing atm so sadly can't commit to driving too far.

I've seen a nice looking chap at the dog's trust in Snetterton

But wondered if any of you lovely people knew of a poochie needing a new home and lots of love

Thank you in advance

Oooh, I love dog-hunting! Wood Green Animal Shelter is in Cambridge, that's where we got Leah from. This looks like a nice dog, although she is 8 years old so maybe you'd be looking for something a bit younger:

I will keep looking.

ETA: If Peterborough is not too far to travel, you could have a look at the rescue centre where I volunteer. They have some gorgeous dogs!
http://www.homes4dogs.co.uk/#/home-wanted-2/4524502851 Sally, the lurcher at the top of this page, looks so similar to my dog Leah! I walked her the other day and fell in love with her, although she does jump up quite a lot which might not be ideal for an older lady who is easily knocked over...

Thanks, but they say she would like to be the only dog in the house, which with the way Popple comes and goes next door, would not be the case, and plus they don't know what she is like with cats. We really need one guaranteed good with cats.

I can recommend Hope Rescue - they have a forum and you find out far more about the dogs before you go and see them, you get far more pictures than any other site I looked on. I got my Jack there and Jack now has his own blog on their forum!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I can't see anything in our area that sounds suitable, but shall keep an eye on there
