Anyone any idea how to figure out if I can get a lorry round a corner at our yard, without trying as it would be difficult to reverse out of the situation. The road to our yard is a single lane track with the last big a 90 deg turn with trees and walls on all sides. I think it would be ok but I'd like some way to calculate it.

Any ideas anyone

Measure the area up. Mark it up with something non permanent (football referee spray paint?) on a car park or dry field, and try driving it?

.

Thanks all good ideas, I did think about reversing in but its about 1k of single track off a narrow junction 🙁 the track is wide enough for lorry but not by much. Nx

How big (length/width/height) is your lorry? How big are your mirrors and how far do they extend out? How high are the walls/hedges and how low are the overhanging trees? Your problem with a 90' turn isn't the turn so much as how much space you have on the outside of the corner to prepare for it.

Don't forget how level the ground is if there is a building or tree next to the turn. Seen a number of accidents where the bottom of the box made a turn but the box was on unlevel ground, tipped a bit, and the top did not make it.

Oh blimey I'm even more concerned now, I'm used to a very short 7.5 tonne with no skirts, but its died and I've moved yards. So looking for another lorry but it's likely to be longer and have skirts. There isn't any space before the turn to prepare for the turn, will def have to measure, I can load half way down I think so not a disaster if I cant get to the yard and the lorry is stored elsewhere.

If it is already an equestrian property, I would have thought the owners could give some idea of what lorries fit?

Lol, I'm ok at driving and manovering in small spaces and getting it right but no expert and I'm used to a compact lorry. This is just one of those situations where if you get it wrong or there isnt enough room you could get stuck 😱. No one else at the yard has a lorry, its a small yard, although there a few houses so they must have delivery lorries come round.

It totally depends on the width of the opening and what is immediately beyond that opening...I.e.buildings etc ... if there’s nothing but an open yard it’ll be a breeze! If there are buildings immediately beyond the gate then you need to plot which way you will have more swing room... this will dictate which direction you need to approach the yard from...you may have to drive past turn around further down the lane and come back from the different direction.
It’s definately easier to reverse in than to drive forwards in...

If ive got to get in somewhere tight i just either get someone to watch me in or if thats not possible i just edge it in slowly and get out to check the bind side. I agree with others reversing in and driving out is generally the best bet. ..if it goes in itll come back out!

I remember watching an episode of Ice Road Truckers once - a driver went over 30 miles down the wrong road. He had to reverse his artic all the way back.

Lol, it would feel like 30 miles if I had to reverse back down the track between the stone walls. Weirdly once in the yard there is plenty of space to turn round.

What is the largest vehicle that you know does go down there? What about bin lorries, feed/bedding delivery trucks etc? I would have thought it would be rare to put reasonably modern buildings somewhere a truck won't go due to things such as need to deliver building materials to the site in the first place and access for emergency services eg fire engine.

None of them are new houses think very old farmstead and building. I know we can get a big straw waggon down. So I'm thinking it will be alright.

Just give yourself as much room as you possibly can on your good side evan if it seems a bit exagerated and kerp checking your blind side eirher by getting out or have someone watch you once youve got the knack of getting in and out it will get easier and you can show off a little bit!

Pics? My husband drives HGVs commercially - he can usually tell from a decent picture what size of lorry you're likely to get round a corner/down a road

When I first started out with a trailer, I did a few test runs with my daughters Playmobil car and trailer :-D worked brilliantly, I used the road measures to scale for the toy car
