I couldn't bring myself to post last week when we made the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to Jess. I knew I would be upset but I didn't anticipate the actual goodbye going so badly. My favourite vet came to the house but Jess just didn't want to go and he had to keep giving her more and more sedative which she fought to the end. It was really awful and we are all feeling her loss ,especially my young Weim Nickel ( now aka Odes) and I think we need to find him a friend.
So this is where I need your thoughts .
I would ideally like another Bleu de Gascogne hound as I think they are amazing or a German Pointer as I'm pretty certain one would be a good match for a crazy Weim. However a post came up on a local rescue for a 8-10 month hunting dog of mixed blood. Possibly a cross with a German Pointer but I see bloodhound there as well and something I can't put my finger on. Greyhound maybe, I don't know. Anyway I made contact via her FB and it seems she is a nice young dog. Good with cats and calm in nature . I expressed interest and asked if we could visit and this is where i'm having a bit of a ummmm moment.
The lady i'm talking to is not the one looking after her and she won't let me visit the foster placement but wants to bring the dog straight to us and leave her for an adoption period of 10 days to see how we all get on and if all is well we proceed with formal adoption and pay towards vet costs etc or obviously she goes back to where she is now if it doesn't work. She's very keen to get us together despite us not having the preferred safe garden, but also won't tell me how much the 'contribution ' would be. I know this is going to sound harsh but iv'e lost a lot of faith in people's honesty over the years and I'm just not comfortable having somebody iv'e never met pitch up to my house with a dog iv'e never met either. She keeps sending messages through along the lines of you need to act quickly , other people interested etc. Fair enough, but I need to think on this and the last message was just ??????
I always thought it was normal and better to go and visit the dog where it is now so you can judge it in a place its used to?
So what to do?
Am I overthinking as actually iv'e never adopted a dog before.

I can't quite believe Jess is gone to be honest. 13 years is a long time and it's always been Jessie and Puppy despite the fact that Odes is 3 now. Thank you so much for your kind words :). I can't bring myself to post a photo. I'm a bit done with crying for the moment and I think you all know what she looked like.....EARS !!!!! Funny how I seem to like cats and dogs with whopping great ears.

I think you are all echoing how I feel. I 'm thinking of the cats as well and I would really have wanted to make sure that she is indeed good with them before inviting her into my house with ours. So Thank you . I think i'm going to send her a polite message and contact the local chasse or Gascogne cub to see if I can track down a puppy or youngster. It's a little soon but Odes is so sad and lost I can't bear it.
I'll keep you all posted. xxxx

I always think that the best way for all concerned to 'get over' the loss of a much loved pet is to find another pretty soon. It certainly helped our Rottweiler to feel happier after we had to pts her sister, when we got the Lab pups. It gave her something else to think about.

Thanks Pearl and Clodagh.
So I sent a very nice message etc and so far have had no response. Ah well.
Have been approved to join the Gascogne club and will post on it later. I'm going to have to fib and pretend i'm a hunter or none of the old boys will sell to us. They can be really funny where hunting dogs go and the sanglier hounds most of all.

I remember the mixture of mirth and horror when I used to walk Jess where we lived before here. That soon stopped when they saw her walking to heel and coming when called. ( that took a bit of work mind! )These type of hounds are never pets in France, which is a tragedy as far as i'm concerned as they are the gentlest of souls and also very funny.Perfect with horses too, which was a lovely surprise when we finally got two!

In an effort to distract Odes over the weekend I thought , right we will do a good walk along the valley , up the other side and back home.
Great idea except the last time I did that circuit I was on a horse and it was so much shorter and quicker. I thought I was going to bloody die of exhaustion crawling up the side of this flippin mountain in 20 degrees and then we had to run through a cow field ( where the fekk did they come from) then somebody moved the bridleway near the end and I got a bit lost..... So over two hours later a very pink me and a nicely worn out Odes staggered down the last stretch to home.

So much easier with two. Open front door and away they go....

I'm sorry you've lost your lovely dog. I think the prospective hound came up on my FB feed and she looked very sweet but apart from the other issues about cost etc, surely it's very unfair on the dog? What if it doesn't work, she gets shunted all over the place, each "trial" she'll be more upset and less likely to settle so on that basis alone I'd say if you can't meet the dog first it's a no.

So sorry to hear about your older dog. It is heartbreaking to say goodbye. :( If you are interested in hound types, might you consider a trail hound - they are really lovely, lovely dogs and athletic enough to be a good match with a weim potentially? The Lakeland Trailhound Welfare group are really sound and sensible with rehoming - they have dogs of all ages too. If you can bear to think about it their website is here: http://www.trailhoundwelfare.org.uk/. My old girl was one of these and she really was a great character. We miss her muchly. Best wishes at such an awfully sad time.

So sorry for your loss Shady.
Well done for starting to think about a new companion but I wouldn’t touch the arrangements offered for the dog you have found. Back off and search elsewhere, there will be the right one waiting for you xx

so sorry about Jess and I hope you find Odes a friend. I have found over the years that if something doesn't feel right for a reason that you cannot even understand then just walk away. There will be a dog waiting somewhere that is the chosen one.

Can I thank you all again for your kind words and sage advice. YCBM is correct regarding this forum being a great place with some wonderful people. I love being a part of it :)

I finally got a response which read ' dommage '. This means shame, or 'a shame 'in this case. At least I think it does but I guess she could be saying shame on me for not saying yes.
Then a bit later she added that we'd missed the chance of a spectacular dog. So uncool to guilt trip me like that, so I rummaged a little and found a post dated 4th April. That's quite a bit of time between now so I can't help thinking she's been trialed somewhere and it didn't work. I don't know and I probably never will but I do feel a little sad and really hope she finds a good home.

A lovely looking breed Palo. I'm not sure what they are called over here or even if they exist . I'll have a look. They look very familiar.
Very pretty head and I like the lean build . Not quite grabbing me in the way my Weim does or the big bloodhounds but I can see why you suggest them. xx

Well doesn't that prove you've done the right thing? I turned down a saddle because it was damaged (she wanted £950 for it, too!) and the girl messaged me later to say she had sold it. How pathetic.

It's odd enough for a rehoming place not to want to see where the dog would be, never mind not allowing you to meet it before committing to it being in your home for 2 weeks. Seriously strange.

I now have pictures of you striding everywhere with a big gun slung on your shoulder just in case you are spotted by someone wanting a home for a hunting dog/pup ?.

I really like the French stag hounds, their heads, being flatter than our foxhounds, are very attractive. I'm not sure if you want anything with quite that much drive though!

I'm having a total mental name blank on the breed that is used as a gundog in the UK but looks like a hound. Come on gundog people...
