Lost my Lovely Jessie hound and need your advice please

Just a quick update as I went to see Mr Grumpy . Actually I can never pronounce his name so I call him Mr Cor Blimey . He was having a snooze so I got the equally scary Mrs Cor Blimey who wasn't having any of the hunting dogs going as pets either. She looked utterly confused that I was even suggesting such a thing . Lol. She did promise to pass my message on but I can almost see the conversation they will have . It will involve a lot of hand waving and head shaking.

Tomorrow we are going to see an old hunter over the valley who used to breed Ariegeois hounds. Perhaps he still does . I remember they were beautiful and a more delicate version of the Gascogne/ Gascon hounds.
They look like this. Not brilliant but I grabbed it quickly :)

Really sorry to hear about your loss.

Just wanted to say don't discount the Vizsla if meeting the hunting man doesn't go to plan. We have a Vizsla who is as quiet as a lamb in the house (well... Mostly!) and from the evidence of my FB Vizsla groups the Weim/Viz combo is popular and seems to work well.
I hear you regarding Vizsla's and I think they are really stunning dogs, but my only personal experience of a young Weim and a younger Vizsla together was absolute mayhem, with both trying to outdo each other in the maddest behaviour. The Vizsla won !!
I do love a challenge but actually i'm not even sure I could find one near me. They are not very popular here.

Ooh, I like the look of those!! Good luck with your hound hunt :)

Sorry I’m late in on this, shady.I’m so sorry for your news.
Ovr here we have hunting dog rescues galore..pups even..spinone,setters,Bracco,segugio ..they can’t find enough homes for them.
Careful with the heavier types..HD is rife..these dogs are casually bred and often abandoned at under a year for such reasons here.
Good luck with your quest..can’t wait to see the pup.

have you considered a drahthaar? Wire haired German hunting dog..responds well to training..serious dog.

Thanks B:)
Wow that is very different to here. There seems to be very very few hunting dogs in rescues as far as I can see. I could make a few guesses as to why but apart from a really really old hound and one with epilepsy ,all the rescues seem to be collie crosses, Malinois or Malinois crosses. There are very few rescues at all near me.
Point taken regarding HD. One of the things I like about the Gascognes etc is their health. Nothing really scary apart from bloat . I think i'd be happy to buy non registered ( non LOF) from a hunter, but if I opt for a pointer type i'd want to buy a good one(LOF) and they start at 1000 euro's. .
I did look at the Drahthaar and I love the funky beard but I really prefer smooth coated dogs. Fussy ? moi ? ummmm, yes a bit. :) x

Pointer you say...just to show you few few of the “hunt or dump “dogs..

Honestly B I have nothing like that around here.
Where the hell do they all go then....
The Weims do come up on the selling sites for re homing and as a Weim owner I always know even before I podge on the photo what they will say. Young Weims just under a year, no time to give them and needing an experienced owner with big garden etc etc. They are always expensive and never free. They are one of the few crossover breeds here that have gone from being difficult to find and really only going as gundogs to being the latest family must have, along with Malinois, American Staffies, American Bullies and Pocket Bullies ( I do not know what this is ).

I keep trying to push the OH towards the German Pointers. What a glorious dog. Still resisting ...damn him !!!

The Ariegeois breeder has stopped due to age. I forget sometimes how time ticks on .

My search continues and in the mean time Odes and I are having fun running all over the valley and hills here. He is a lot happier and the two Gremkitties are sleeping with him at night. I have also noticed that he no longer has a need for his slow feeder bowl and doesn't appear in the front room with a whole pile of my clothes crammed in his mouth.
It is giving me a bit of a wobble about getting another dog but at the end of the day I think he would appreciate one

Have you ever thought about cross matching?for years a had a pair of st poodles...but after three in succession I decided to cross match..ie keep a high upkeep breed with a completely different one..( schnauzer)
So,what about a mastiff type..I actually see your set up with a dogue de Bordeaux..wonderful gentle dog with your pack, would mother the kits and yet you’d have an insuperable guard .
my girl had French lines (de l etang )
and spanish( siscar)
she was a home body ,but could also do a 5 km hike.

I agree with above..take a breath and there is a new dynamic.
For every new phase in our lives there is a new dog./or new breed .....even a new man in some scenarios lol

What once was the perfect formula may not always work in a new dynamic.
I would enjoy the new dynamic for a while and really think about the dog that would fit into ,rather than replace, the future scenario.

That is some dog B:)
Iv'e got to be honest and say dogs like that and Rotties really unnerve me due to being bitten by a friends Rottie as a child . I know you can never judge a breed by one negative experience, but the sheer size and bulk of them makes me gulp a bit.
One of the other things I love about the big hounds is their lack of guarding , also they are not possessive , jealous dogs and after getting rid of some energy will just loll around being lazy. They don't ' want' all the time or need much fussing. No separation issues or freak outs with odd noises and mega storms.
Gosh I do really like them don't I

Just doing an eta to you B and Moobli.

I'm actually going to do this as Odes seems very calm now and because work has changed I am here nearly all the time now and can roam the hills with him every day . If something a little special pops up I will probably phone but I think i'm going to hang fire for a good Grand Bleu de Gascogne

Thanks for your input . I do appreciate it. xx
