Whilst we wait for comp news to pick up and we're all going a little crazy thought it would be fun to find out who has what lucky items when they compete?
I'll kick it off. Mine were a pair of red velvet knickers  I know bizarre but it was in my younger days and I had been to an all night party before competing that morning. Suffice to say it was the first class I won on my mare and they became my good luck charm, fortunately I'd had the forsight to change the bra that went with them as it glared through the white shirt!

They stayed my lucky charm for several years until I had the misfortune to fall off xc on my backside. The paramedic asked me to drop my jods, his eyebrows were very :eek:as he took in the faded pink holey velvet knickers, I said "those are my lucky red pants" to which he replied "they don't seem very lucky or very red" suffice to say they were binned that evening!:D

I have a pair of stripey joules socks!! first time i wore them i won a big class so wear them all the time when competeing now - not so good at multi day shows tho lol

Did they not glare under your white jods?! I don't have a good luck charm, not successful enough yet, but I am pretty superstitious so it is only a matter of time!

at what made you ditch your lucky charm!

My "lucky" thing is to always wear bright/patterned socks for competing. They don't have to be a particular pair or anything, just as long as they're not plain. :o

Years ago I had a white t-shirt with a photo of Nicole Uphoff and Rembrandt. I wore it when schooling at my first big national show and my little horse went so well that my then trainer jokingly told me to use it as an undershirt the day after, for the competition! So I did and continued to use it as a "lucky" vest for years.

It's still sitting in my old wardrobe at my parents' house, I could actually start wearing it again :D

For a whole season, I wore this jade little pendant that my dad got me from hong kong that said "good luck" in Chinese. I never lost wearing it, including my two final championship classes. I "retired" it after that season . . . but I haven't been really lucky lately, maybe I should tie it on Riley's halter to keep him sound?

Fortunately (or not) even at a size 8 my backside
was never small enough for white ;)

I don't have a 'lucky' item, however I do have competition knickers. They are seemless, and flesh coloured, so don't show up under light coloured breeches. My worst result last season came when all my competition knickers were in the wash, so ended up wearing that horrid pair that are stuck at the back of your knickers draw (you know the pair I mean, everybody has atleast 1!). I'm not sure if these knickers brought me bad luck, or if it was the 'cheese wire' effect, sufficed to say I didn't get a good dressage score, and it went downhill from there!

I chuckled at this! :D The flesh coloured ones are the best for sure - pale jods are horrendous enough without visible undercrackers!

My mum found a little coloured horse button that she stiched into my hacking jacket, I actually became so dependent on it that I made her cut it out and stitch it into my gods so I could always wear it, even when competing without my hacking jacket on :D
Unfortunately after more than a few washes it is more like half a horse :(

I refuse to compete wearing new things, but I think that one is fairly widespread!

When I was a teenager my mum used to get so nervous watching me jump she gave me a tiny china monkey that she said I had to keep in my jacket pocket to keep me safe- she calls it my lucky monkey. 15 years later its still in there every time I compete.

I have a pair of unlucky toggi breeches, which are gathering dust at the back of my wardrobe :p

But I don't have a specific "pair" of lucky socks (I can never remember which ones are lucky) so my lucky socks are ones that don't match! Ie. I will wear brown and blue ones, but one is spotty and the other stripy :D

I do however have a lucky £5 that stays in my jacket pocket!

I like to compete wearing new things. I like to be able to have something to blame if things go wrong.

Ha, that's a good idea!
Mine comes from more of a comfort than lucky point of view. I need to be comfortable to concentrate on what I'm doing, rather than thinking oh these are a bit tight! I always did my uni exams in trackie bottoms, my OHs hoodies and ugg boots, not that it did me any good!

Mine is a pair of SSG gloves. They are so comfy and they fit me perfectly.Everytime I have worn them I have won or had a brilliant round and when I rode a friends horse for the first time in them we came 2nd but I left them in her lorry by accident and I refused to compete 'til I had them back!

my xc jersey, the one in all the pics in my siggy - i bought it in Next Boys' section about 18 yrs ago and it's still going strong! I have another very similar one as a back-up, but my Next one is definitely my lucky one, i've done all the big stuff in it, and I wouldn't want to be in the start box at anything big again without it on! it sort of feels a bit special, I've never had anything other than a silly run-out or a pathetic flop-off in it, never had a horse fall, so i like to think it's got some magic in it... ;) ;)

as i've reported before I have a pair of knickers with 4 leaf clovers on them

I used to think they were lucky until Hartpury where i took my 1st tumble in water at the lake - i then had to walk back (those who have been to Hartpury know its annoying that you have to follow the course as you can't cross the pitches - so its a long way back to the stables  ) in wet see-through jods with my bum covered in 4 leaf clovers

i got so much stick its not even funny and to make things worse we have the photo sequence framed on the wall

I have a pair of Lucky Leprechaun socks my best friend sent me from Ireland. I eventually wore through them, so she sent me a new pair which I always wear when I compete - and the original pair of socks come too (in my competition bag!).

i have unlucky black knee socks - whenever i wear them competing it goes badly! im sure my white jods are lucky as i'[ve been placed both times (i haven't had them for long) wearing them!! :D

My lucky item is a whip I won at a Championships and it's been my favourite ever since! It just has the right width and grip that other whips don't... Maybe it's just me :P

Used to be black glittery sheep socks for dressage, but they wore out. Have been replaced by a pink panda t-shirt - bought for me by a chum who said "like the panda, your interest in dressage has come back from near extinction!". It seems to work.

For jumping it was a pair of pink pants with a little cow motif on them. However, after a very unflattering picture taken from behind by my darling mother (gotta love her), they have been relegated to the bin, and replaced with a much sturdier pair bought from Primark, but fortunately also with a cow on them. These ones haven't been tested yet, due to the ipending ice-age!

Ha I just make sure I wear matching socks! I never do for everyday stuff - pretty much first up best dressed in my house! Also always like to make sure I have everything just so when competing....which is weird as I am not like that normally - I'm quite the chaotic scatterbrain!
Also have a theory that if the plaits go well the day goes bad and vice versa -queue intentional messy plaits!

I have lucky and unlucky numnahs, and am always kind of superscious about how he's behaving when we get there... if hes a kn*b to tack up and handle then it usually goes well, if hes well behaved then it doesnt go well!

Agree with this.

Would also like to know why none of us have lucky 'plain white' knickers!

Also feel your shame of walking back with wet jods and lucky clover pants :D
