hi, i have a 2 year old hanoverian gelding, who, up to yet has never had any skin complaints or problems. while grooming him today i noticed that he has little lumps all over one side of his body, from neck to tail, not on legs or back, just his side (he does have a few on his other side but not half as many) i did bath him a week ago in a propper equestrian shampoo, i have not changed his feed for about 2 months and as far as i can think i have not given him anything he hasnt had before. i have been told it looks like an elergic reaction and that i should bath him in an antibacterial shampoo and give him some common antihistamines? is this correct and what advise does anyone els have for me befor i make the expencive call for the vet, thanks.

This has happened to me twice over the years, both times youngsters not having any sense where they roll !! The first time, vet was called pronto!! Was told that he had probably rolled in a nest of midges being a baby and a bit low in the sense department!! Second time vet was not called, and I think the horse was bitten by bugs and midges and reacted just because he had sensitive skin. I did tell the vet that time, and was told the horse could have been given a low dose of steroids which would have calmed the reaction. However, lumps reduced over the following few days. Hope this helps x

The same thing happens to my boy every year, starting this time of year. The bumps dont bother him and vet just said he has sensitive skin and as soon as the biting things come out, so will the bumps! Each bump disappears within 3-4 days and new ones appear. Only ever on his tummy/shoulder/chest

Allergic reactions from eaten or inhaled things can just appear on one side (frequently do), or one part of the body - so don't be too focussed on 'where' on his body the rash is.

Speaking as the owner of a mare that comes out in bumps from spring to autumn, this is the third year of it, and we haven't got to the bottom of it..... good luck, I hope it's something simple.

Try giving him a bath with Nizerol - you can buy it at the chemist. Dilute in hand hot water, lather up well working well into the hair to the skin. Leave 10 mins and scrape off residue then allow to dry.

If the lumps are caused by a fungal infection Nizerol will sort it out within a week.
