Goddy is covered in what can only be described as "hives", tiny little lumps that look like a massive heat rash or something all over his neck and flanks on both sides. Someone else turned him out this morning for me, and he had them then, but they were still there this afternoon when I wnet down to see him. He isnt itchy on them, but is sensitive to the touch. They cover him from shoulder to tail, except on his saddle patch. Non of his rugs/numnahs etc have been washed in anything new, and he isnt getting alot of hard feed, nor has his feed changed recently. Any ideas please?

A horse on our yard used to get lots of lumps all over just like what you described and it was due to much protein in his diet, But as you say you not changed it recently and hes been on it a while seems unlikely to be that.

Might be worth speaking to vet over the phone to see what they think?

Thanks, I did think of the protein thing too. I did speak to my vet aswell, he said it could be something he had eaten and to check his feed ration. He is on 1 scoop of Alfa A and 1.5 scoops of comp mix a day, and 3kg of soaked hay, so not really excessive for his work and size. He had it cut down last week as was off work, then slowly built back up over the course of this week....just wander if anything e could have eaten in the field could have caused a reaction!?!

Hmm, Could someone have fed him something in field or over stable to cause him to come out in he rash? Or could he have caught himself in nettles or something.

How rather strange

There are lots of nettles in his field, but would expect the bumps to be in one area instead of all over?! He will do anything to try and get out of SJing!!!!!

Lol horses who would have them, is there anyway he could have got caught in the nettles and ended up with lumps all over?

Was you meant to be going SJing tomorrow? I did have a show but its cancelled due to weather

Very unlikely re. the nettles, he has a fly sheet on yesterday anyway, and wouldnt have expected them to come up overnight if that was the case....

Yes, Sjing tomo, fingers crossed they have gone down....

I am sure they will have gone down by then, its hard to comment on what it could be not seeing it.
Well hope they are down tomorrow and best of luck to those that actually have shows to go to

This happened to Beano a few weeks ago (see post in vets) and we weren't sure waht caused it. We hadn't changed his feed/bedding/hay, he couldn't have rolled on nettles and it wasn't fly bites. After a few days he began to get irritable and itchy so the vet came out and gave him a corticosteroid injection - this made no difference. We then decided to take out his supplements and just feed him his Alfa A Lite, after a few days it did dissappear but that could have been just time....going to put him back on supplements (only vits and mins) and see what happens...
It's most odd

Thanks. He really needs to go Sjing tomo tbh, got a BE event next week, and last jumping sess we had was disastrous due to his bad back

Aw poor man, hope his back is better, bet you feel the difference in his way of going though dont you?
I think you should give up this eventing lark and let me take him and do some showing and working hunter classes

See I will still jump him to keep you happy

Just I dont do well in showjumping underpressure

Thnaks Troggy, Ive just cut his feed down to hay and Alfa for the next 2 or three days. Fingers crossed he doesnt need cortisone injections, would be yet another event missed

Lol! he'd quite like workers I think. Wouldnt do well in pure showing as he has a monster splint behind

You'd be fed up with him within a week!

My filly had this last year, she was absolutely covered head to toe. We rang our vet who told us to nip to the chemist and get some phenergan, as by this point they were causing her to roll constantly as they were itching her so much. She had rolled in the nettles however. Within a couple of hours the Phenergan had taken effect and within a day or so they had completely disappeared. I hope Goddy makes a swift recovery and that you get to take him SJ'ing tomorrow Kat.

No I wouldnt I would cope

Splints dont matter so much, I know a lot of horses that have splints and the judges dont know

See you have no excuse now

Thanks Benjis_girl, whats phenergan?! WIll try and track some down if he isnt any better tomo! Sods law they will still be there in the morning, and go by tomo afternoon!!!

Its always the case isn't it?? Lol!!

Just nipped and got the box, Phenergan's an anti histamine, if you go to any chemist they should be able to find it for you. Will PM you!!

My friends horse had a similar rash / hives when she put her on a basic vit and mineral supplement but as you said you hadn't changed feed it couldn't really be that. Sounds like some sort of allergy though

my mare had this, covered in lumps head to toe, she had been rolling over nettles in field with fly rug on, i was told to piriton ( normal human anti histamine) in her feed and over night the lumps had gone, so i always keep bottle in my feed room now!!!

Sounds like what happened to J earlier in the year turned out his were heat/sweat bumps but spent ages playing around with feed thinking it was an allergy. Washed him down in a iodine wash which seemed to calm things down, also put some epsom salts in his feed. Not sure if that helps

Thanks everyone, will try teh antihistimin route if they dont go down...

MH, thought that, but the only place theyre not is his saddle area where he gets sweaty!!? Gave him a hibiscrub bath this afto nd he is naked tonight so hopefully if it is that they will go down....

I think it may be trial and error KatB. A girl next to us had a horse that developed these and after a few test found it was allergic to hawthorn. Had been eating new soft shoots. So it could be an allergy to something in the field.

AH ok, you may have a point there MH....though yesterday was the first time he had been worked enough to get hot since his back was out.... BUT he had sheepskin under his saddle so that may have actually helped....!?!

Using a fly spray on him? If so, have you bought a different brand recently?

I bought Lincoln Tea Tree Oil Insect Repellent for Patches and she came out in huge hive type lumps. Turns out it contains DEET and I assume it is the DEET she reacted to.

She also only had them on her neck and flanks, where I apply most spray I guess. Disappeared a day or two after I stopped using it.
