Lunging problems with 27 y/o......

It's a lovely lunging pen that our wonderful YOs built last year.

It seems to be rather a fail with Obi though .

If it's any consolation, my horse lunged happily all his life until he reached 27 and suddenly decided it was just beneath him. Now he just stands in one spot and looks at me with cool disdain.

I would stand him in the middle and then just run round him in circles myself.
OK it isn't very BHS but no one will think you are bonkers. Honest.

Position yourself behind the shoulder ( you aren't in the video) and move the lunge whip behind his quarters. All he is doing is staring at the whip in wonder. Behind quarters will give the message that he is to move forward. Good luck!

Physically TOUCH him in some way - either with the end of the lash, or kick some of the surface at him. In the video you are just threatening him with empty threats - and he knows it. You don't need to hurt him, just startle him with the realisation that you CAN get to make life uncomfortable for him.
Aren't horses smart though? He knows you aren't really willing to do much more than make a noise

He looks at me and considers if I mean it or not.....

He can be lunged and controlled by voice and pointing the whip high, low, behind or in front......but he needs to know I really mean it .

Trouble is he knows I'm not really meaning it today .

The stand-off continued for a few more minutes where he stood with his dignity and waited patiently for me to desist .

I gave up, dropped the whip and went and scratched his belly while he quivered and kissed the air.....much more pleasant for him .

Well for a start you have totally the wrong equipment He should be full tacked up and booted, not forgetting the side reins, which must be tight to pull his head in Then you must beat him into submission

I think you need to get his back, teeth and saddle checked.

Then have his shoes taken off and remove all hard feed from his diet and just feed him good quality forage.

If that fails then you clealy need to get a professional in to sort the issue before it gets worse as it seems that you are not experienced enough to deal with it. If all elsr fails then PTS is the kindest thing to do, you couldn't possibly sell him how he is!

On a more serious note try holding it closer to him and more towards his back end so he knows you want him to ho forwards.

That may just be repeating what you know and the video isn't clear where exactly you are and on what angle!

Don't be stupid he clearly needs shoes putting on and fed some forget me not farm chaff, happy hoof and pasture mix. Give him a couple of lickets a day for energy. Oh and some Effol on those hooves. Any old saddle will fit fine, he is 27, there is no point getting it checked out what a waste of money.
