How long after this can I start riding normally?

My boy was lame last Friday, with no obvious injury (small area of mud rash), heat or swelling, I didnt worry but on Saturday, his hind leg was swollen from his sheath area to his hock, so got the vet who said his temperature was up and diagnosed Lymphangitis, with a weeks worth of ABS and painkillers and to watch him carefully. He said he felt we were lucky as we had caught it early and to keep him out as much as possible with light exercise when he was more comfortable. The next day the swelling went to his fetlock, but thankfully his leg looks normal now, he is sound and has stood in today without it swelling. I have walked him this week as advised but wonder when I can start doing a bit more with him. The ABs have finished and he has 2 more days of Danillon to go.

Thanks for reading

I would take it very gently with just a little bit of trot on a softish surface (grass or manège) once the danilon is finished building it up gradually over the next week or two up to normal. But keep a close eye, once they've had Lymphamngitis they will be prone to it in future (tho nrmally less severe each episode). Cold hosing can help as can a little salt in feed if they aren't a brilliant drinker as it encourages them to drink more fluid to flush out the toxins,

Thanks for replying.
I rode him today, just in walk with a trot on the field but Im not convinced he feels right and Im paranoid now. He felt like he was walking funny last Thursday, no obvious lameness but like he was walking bent, almost banana like, the lameness and swelling came the day after and today he felt slightly bent. His leg is normal size and he isnt lame and I may just be feeling things as I am over analysing it.
I will check him later, just hope Im imagining it :(

Echinacea herb to support body defences is a blood cleanser and a Lymphatic system cleanser , hope this helps.

Check him really carefully in the morning for any swelling. But if he doesnt feel right, I would stick to walking exercise for a bit longer. Don't panic tho, he will get better any any future attacks are likely to be progressively less horrid, my 20yo got it at 9 and had episodes tailing off for about 4 years but didn't have any after that, just slightly puffy fetlock if he did xc or hunting.

Half a sachet of bute can be useful to reduce inflammation and make them comfy.

NB I found leg wraps useful overnight (thermatex ones with cordura outer were the best as they do up securely but not toooooo tight)

Thanks, he was fine tonight and is sleeping out so I will check him again first thing. Its such a worry.
Hes 14 now, Ive had him since he was rising 4 and this is the first time he has had it. Im presuming bacteria has got in through the mud rash?? It wasnt bad though and Im on top of it now.

Thanks Shergar, I will have a look at that.

mines just recovering i was told to walk for 15 in hand for a few days this got too dangerous to do ( fit horse doing naff all) the increase to 20 mins with a small amount of trot after a further check from vet two weeks later im doing my usual treotting on even ground.
mine had a burst blood vessel that affected a lymph gland no obvious signs untill he couldnt walk from the field so 2 weeks of bute and two injections a day for 5days with antibiotics for good measure ( had a high temp) were ok@d for flat work but not jumping for 8 weeks (4 to go not that im counting)
I was recommended echinaeca (sp) too.

I had this with mine last October.. he'd never had it before and i clipped his whole leg out and me and the vet couldnt find an obvious entry for the bacteria but with meds and walking it off it went down and he hasn't had a problem with it since thankfully! I was very paranoid when i was battling mud fever after he had had it but it never resulted in another flare up..

Good luck i'm sure your horse will recover well and ot havea problem again

Thanks for the great replies.
Really to please to hear your horses have and are recovering well. My boy seems fine (touches wood) and I rode him gently on Sunday and the bent feeling wasnt there :D Im still a bit paranoid, his last danillon was today, no reoccurance of the swelling, so hopefully we had a mild case.
