It's a terrible accident but it was a trailer, not a horsebox. That doesn't make it any better for the horse owners or for other trailer owners, but it does mean that van and truck horsebox drivers can sleep a little bit more easily tonight than they might.

Thoughts are with the owners of the two horses, what an awful thing to happen.

How awful. It was always something I dreaded when towing on the motorway. Other motorists don't understand that you might be going a bit slower - but then other things go slowly too.

I plastered the rear ramp with reflective tape, and wording. I noticed that big lorries would see me from a long way back and start overtaking.

The driver in the accident simply wasn't paying attention.

The professional traffic services obviously think so as their vehicles are plastered with the stuff. Worth a try .

There’s nothing catches the eye more on a motorway than that on the back of a vehicle, because you can’t tell till up close enough to it, whether it’s police or not, so drivers tend to tread cautiously till they work out what it is.

Be careful about reflective stuff on the back. After the nick gauntlet accident very close to me I was going to do the same. A police friend looked into it and discovered there are so many rule and a trailer is not long enough to allow additional reflective stuff to be legal. Even though that seems strange as surely the easier seen the better.

I don't think anyone can prevent you from painting the panels of your ramp in psychedelic swirls of dayglo?

I got my OH to fit a line of flashing orange lights to my van in case we ever get stuck on a dumbsmart motorway. Strangely he need me to explain why I needed them to be able to be turned on from the cab instead of in the back!

I tried to screen grab on the above video but the quality is too bad. I’m sure with the original you would at least be able to detect the colour and type of vehicle, if not make and model. From there, motorway cameras should be able to pin down a reg number.

Horrible thing to happen. I hope they are caught and the victim able to mentally recover from the trauma.

I wondered about that.

There are an increasingly large amount of illegal vehicles driving about then as whilst a few years ago it was only highway maintenance cars and vans you’d see decked out like that but I see quite a lot of other work (commercial) vehicles the same now.

I remember in the 90s we had a 7.5t and a 12t lorry and we had to take the hi viz stickers and tape off the smaller one for its test because the rules had changed and it was no longer permitted on trucks 7.5t and below. So stupid.

I think it was 2014 when plastering the backs of any vans used on motorways or for maintenance/recovery with hi viz chevrons was brought in, and now seems to be standard.

My trailer (and the previous one) has hi viz tape on the ramp and I think I will add some more. Nobody has ever told me I can't.

I hope they catch the driver. Poor foals.

I can imagine what the owners were going - I lived through mine to tell the tail, even though my mare scrambled out the roof she was lucky, these poor horses were not, they must have been petrified.

I hope they do a nationwide plea for more dash cam footage.

There must must be other cars on the same side as this car was that had dash cam as well as the truck behind the trailer or cars cruising where the vehicle must have past them prior to hitting the trailer. I had these on my lorry 1696758743132.png

from google:

Where do you put reflective tape on a horse trailer?

At the back of the vehicle, two continuous strips must be used in the lower rear and two inverted L shapes of solid white must mark the top corners of the trailer. Trucks must be marked with reflector tape in a similar fashion.

Hi everyone,
Looking for assistance with any possible dashcam footage from the m25 at about 8:50-9:00 where my horsebox was crashed into by a driver who didn't stop and no registration captured.
Both horses passed away.
If you could please share this on we need to get justice for the poor animals that suffered this morning
The horse box is a write off any assistance is appreciated
