So sad! Can I suggest that reflective tape is so cheap and maybe we should plaster our boxes and trailers with it. An incident like this brings back memories of poor Nick Gauntlets tragic accident up in Scotland.

This has some useful diagrams, and also gives guidance on positioning - e.g. not within 200mm of a stop lamp. It also specifies the approved type of tape and colours.

As far as I can tell, you are allowed to optionally apply reflective conspicuuity tape. It gives a list of exempted vehicles, and says this about optiionally fitting:

"Optionally-fitted conspicuity markings
The amendments allowed vehicles to be fitted with optionalconspicuity markings but where fitted optionally to vehiclesfirst used (or manufactured in the case of trailers) on or after10 July 2011 they are required to conform to the relevant ECERegulation 48 requirements. If compliant conspicuity markingsare optionally-fitted to vehicles, then there is no requirement tofit rear marker plates to vehicles. However, the optional use ofrear marker plates in addition to conspicuity markings continuesto be permitted. The RVLR were also updated to require rear marker plates, when fitted optionally from the mandatory conspicuity markingimplementation date of 10 July 2011, to comply with the latesttechnical specifications set out in UN ECE Regulation 70.01. Thisaligned with the latest requirements in UN ECE Regulation 48."

I tried to screen grab on the above video but the quality is too bad. I’m sure with the original you would at least be able to detect the colour and type of vehicle, if not make and model. From there, motorway cameras should be able to pin down a reg number.

Horrible thing to happen. I hope they are caught and the victim able to mentally recover from the trauma.
Unfortunately dash cameras don’t always work as well as you’d think. They will pick up the type / make of vehicle but apparently you can now paint/spray over a number plate so that it isn’t easily read. The police advice is to read the numbers in front of you so that they’re recorded onto the dash cam footage if you see something dodgy.

I don't think anyone can prevent you from painting the panels of your ramp in psychedelic swirls of dayglo?

I got my OH to fit a line of flashing orange lights to my van in case we ever get stuck on a dumbsmart motorway. Strangely he need me to explain why I needed them to be able to be turned on from the cab instead of in the back!
.

I think I may go and raid the B and Q neon glow in the dark paint aisle…

Halfords. Also for some reason independent cheap shops often stock it.
I headed into the random town that I live in and they have 2 of those independent shops that stock everything from stationary to teddies to tools. They had the most bizarre and random neon colours…obviously it will need to look presentable so I’m considering repainting my blue ifor neon pink now…

OMG, I had chills running down my back, why did I not follow it.

I was driving through my local town when just before I turned, a grey VW Sharan was turning left, what I noticed was the passenger side wing lights and bumper were damaged like it hit something def damage like clipped a vehicle. I should have followed it but I wasn't sure what the colour of the car or make but the damage caught my eye. Police were no help. They said call 101 thames valley - I did, they did not even know about the accident, and said you call up the met police, I did and same thing was completely unaware of the accident. Surely it cannot be coincidence that a grey car same model has damage to the passenger side, even to rule it out. its 35 mins from me. In the viideo you can see it behind the dark car in front of it.

Do you think I ought to notify the guy, the police might be able to check Sharans in this local area

Its a real shame that neither the police or the met were helpful for you. I would try to contact them though! I’m sure they’ll appreciate any tips, even if it turns out to be unrelated.

I assume that it is possible work out the street name where the Sharan turned and maybe start the search from there. Police have appealed for dashcam footage.
I drove up it after work but light was fading, and there are so many off shoot cul-de-sacs and roads. If police do a check on all Sharans they can check Sharan owners in the area.

I know the name of the road it turned up and the weird thing was he came down the main road before it turned and turned up S road and lots of the offshoots go back onto the main road, so why did the driver go this way when he could have turned onto the S road straight off the main road.

Now on BBC News site

OH says it looks like the vw driver drifted out of their lane, hence why they were fast to recorrect after hitting the trailer, to return to the lane they came from, rather than stay in the slow lane. I dont see them indicating to go into the slow lane either before hitting the box.
Were they on their phone, not looking and just drifted? A massive horse box is easy to see, which they do see when they hit it to fast correct steering back to the 2nd land, so that rules out medical event.
Its terrible they just drove off, criminal.

Well done for keeping your eyes peeled.
Im not sure its the same vehicle though. The car in the m25 crash footage looks dark grey/blue and has roof-rack bars fitted. Your captured vw looks silver without roof rack bars.
The van towing the horse box looks silver, giving a good colour contrast to the darker vehicle that hit it. I guess vw have standard paint colours to compare with, but it looks like its their navy, if they dont do a dark grey.

That is why I did not follow it but when I got home and re read it states.

Must admit I did not think of the roof bars.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were looking for the driver of a grey Volkswagen Sharan.
The force has urged witnesses to come forward with information and relevant dashcam footage.

Yes, its worth giving your dashcam footage for review to the authorities to professionally review or rule-out. Having left side damage is a definite contender to be ruled-out.
Its hard to tell from such grainy footage and light angle the true colour of cars in the silver/grey spectrum.

I looked at vw colour charts and theres many types of silvers, greys and blues so very hard to compare with the footage.

Here’s a pic of the sharan, it has these subtle curved roof-rack bars, which can be seen on the snapshot m25 police footage
