Magesium

I feed the equivilent of just over a teaspoon (it is the measure from the Pink Powder so 25g?) up to 2 of these measures for a 15.1hh chunky horse. But I do also feed Pink Powder so reckon if it is causing her to pass minerals I am making up for it daily

Ta

fed her that and marmite today and she threw a complete tantrum in the school

still trying to decide if it was the feed or the fact that we had yet another saddler out and she's fed up to the back teeth of testing out saddles that she hates.

if anyone wants a superbly bred sports pony brood mare, do let me know....

hi i have bought a bottle of nettex nice and easy, but after reading your post have bought a bag of calmag do you know at what rate to feed it! many thanks ali

I went for the Mag Ox as although more expensive, it is chelated and more readily absorbed I believe? The CalMag is quite gritty and a couple of my friends' horses didn't take to it at all.

Like others on here I also got mine from Jackie Taylor.

I feed around a dessertspoon a day. This is quite a low dose but she hardly has any feed, and the stuff is gritty and hard to hide.

You can up it when they're on rich grass, it helps to counteract the lami risk.

I've just ordered some from there

. I don't know how much to feed though, I'm thinking about 10 grams? Its still cheap, apparently 12p a day.

It's a lady named Jackie Taylor who sells MagOx....think I've got a pricelist and contact details somewhere which I can search out if anyone's interested?

Me please

I have used Epsom salts with great success

I feed about 10 mls so 2 teaspoons a day, with no ill effects. I have currently got Jester 15.1 cob gelding on epsom salts and Brewers yeast to calm his "stallion herding" behaviour in the field. He is much happier and is coming in stuffed full of grass instead of worrying about his herd

I sent a query into either Spillers or Dodson & Horell a long time ago about this as the price of equine calmers was ridiculous. They said that the farm magnesium, as fed to cattle, would be fine....& as alot of you have said it is far cheaper (doesn't have 'equine' on the label you see)

I was using this and then I got told not to as it unbalances something else. (I can not remember all the details).

Eureka!!Yes, it was on a forum I used to go on.

Beware of long term use of Epsom Salts, there is a lot of posts on the barefoot forum re Mag suppliments, but its not easy to just add, it upsets calcium intake.

That was the problem but it appears that a few on here are using it with no ill effects!!! Arrgggghhhhh!! It is all such a minefield isn't it?

I have also heard tha Epsom Salts can upset Calcium absorbtion.....but I have also heard of people feeding up to a mug full of the stuff per day
blush.gif
which seems a bit excessive to me when I get results from a teaspoon or 2

I'm sure in small amounts there should be no problem

I wonder if thats just the salts (which I've heard you shouldn't feed long term) or Magox in general
confused.gif
. I've just started feeding magox, its all just so confusing!

It is very confusing

I have also heard that magnesium based calmer only work if the horse in question has a current magnesium deficiency. So if the horse isn't lacking in Magnesium then any Mag based calmers will have no effect
crazy.gif

Yeah I read something like that - a mag deficiency can cause nervouness etc, so can be helped by a mag supplement. But if your horse is just loopy then it won't help
tongue.gif
. Some calmers do have other added things to chill them out though. I hope it won't be a calmer for Chex - any more calm and he'll be constantly asleep!!

Thankyou and well done for remembering

. My mare has only been on CalMag for a couple of months, but no ill effects so far!
I'm going to try and do some digging and find out whats what - your minefield decription is an understatement!

I would be very very careful about using Cal Mag. Apparently it does not have calcium in it, it is pure magnesium - that's what Ive been told anyway. Because it doesnt have calcium it in (which needs to be fed alongside Magnesium) - some horses can develop big problems....... although no 100% proof, I have heard of horses on Cal Mag developing bone problems and also going lame. Our vets have said feeding it can cause more harm than good.

I would be VERY careful about this. I have spoken to a nutritionist and they say a lot of people seem to feed the wrong amount - She said the daily amount is tiny, should be no more than 1/3 of a tablespoon!!!! Please people be very wary of using this stuff and ESPECIALLY feeding way too much.

Personally I would always only consider feeding something MADE specifically for horses (like NAF's Magic etc.) which will have the right amount of calcium and will give exact measurments of how much to feed etc.

On the packet I bought, its recomended to feed 1 gram per 100kgs, which is about 10grams of magox for a 500kg horse - it works out about a teaspoonfull or less of pure magensium. I'm trying to find out how much calcium you're supposed to feed with it, I guess it depends how much the grass/hay is deficient in it

Don't use Epsom Salts, the chemical make up is not the same. I asked about using human magnesium tablets and the quantities you would need to use would mean needing about 4 bottles a week.

There are quite a few suppliers of mag/oxide on ebay. Also the Metabolic Horse website has useful information.

I buy mine as Epsom Salts from the supermarket and have fed it for decades with no problems. I also have Magnesium block which I bought from the farm supply store and I leave that in the paddock so they can help themselves.

Ditto this, you can buy magnesium from Feedmark quite cheaply, a tub lasts ages.

Or buy Magnitude from Equine America (the Cortaflex people) at less than £20 a pot - lasts 6 months and is designed for horses.
