Hi,

I wondered if people could help me out; I'm writing an essay on the use of magnets as part of physio, or as standalone products to help arthritis and stiffness etc, and just wondered what people's opinions on the use of magnets are?

Do you use magnetic rugs/boots on your horses, or magnetic bracelets for themselves - and do you think they help? If you do, what convinced you to try it? If you don't, is there a reason why not? General feedback is also appreciated..

Thanks!!

Bumpty Bump, I got some magnetic boots ages ago but never really used them much, but my mare is starting to feel this cold weather joined with standing still munching haylage all day is feeling a bit stiff I would also be really interested to know what peoples experience of them are & how long & how often they put them on.

I'm a complete convert!!!

I badly broke both bones in my wrist 5 years ago, and between bone infection they didn't find for 4 years and ligament damage I was unable to use my left arm for most of each winter (I kept pulling it, and in the cold it constantly throbbed like hell)

Magnetic bracelets don't completely stop the throbbing, but they do improve it so much that I can now use it, and ignore it most of the time, whereas when I don't use them all the time I am in agony.

My horse also has horribly achy knees since he broke them last September, and I just bought a set of magnetic boots to try on him, purely because they work so well for me!!!

Hope this helps!!!

Absolutely love magnetic rugs/boots for horses. When my old boy started to get very stiff I bought some stuff in the hope it would help. He absolutely loved them he would get grumpy when it was time to take them off. He walked sooooo much better so much so I have bought a back pad for my mare unfortunately I lost my old boy due to a problem with his bowel.

I myself have never really seen the difference but totally converted for my pets.

Not for me as I have yet to read any evidence which convinces me that they work and I would never shell out just on the off chance.

I can see no reason why they would work so am happy to steer clear, I'm a bit of a sceptic!

Thanks to all of you for replying, it's good to get a couple of different perspectives :)

Jess, what sort of thing would encourage you to consider it? Would you be more interested in scientific validation/ H&H article/ other people's experiences? Or would something like a deal where you got a refund within 3 months if they didn't make a difference encourage you? Sorry for all the questions, but it would help me out!

I personally would want scientific validation (because I'm a scientist) but actually placebo effect is really massive so if there could be a 3 month trial I might consider that. Obviously placebo effect doesn't work on horses but if it helps me as the rider to ride differently or whatever then maybe worth a shot. If I could try it and see if it worked I might take the plunge (assuming I had something which could potentially benefit. At the moment I only have a fit pair of youngsters so all a bit hypothetical!)

I hope that makes sense, if not prod me and I'll try and explain better!

im not one for fads and if something becomes popular and is the 'next best thing' i usually become anit-it.....BUT....i have a magnetic rug for our horses, AND i use it..... AND i believe it works. My dad has a really bad back and haas done all his life, my mum bought a magnet sheet to go on the bed and didnt tell him, he hardly suffers now.
I dont like the fact that i like them but i do!!!! :p

I love magnetic things.
My knee likes to play up, and really aches when it does. My mum suggested I try a magnetic knee support, within a couple of hours the pain goes away, and now I haven't needed to put it on for months :D I believe it really helped.
I'm going to buy a magnetic back support as when I get cold, it hurts.

My horse has just had an operation on her fron fetlocks, so I am getting magnetic boots for xmas, I believe they'll help the healing process :D

I used to use magnetic leg wraps on a mare with bad windgalls and they did help reduce puffiness; but they couldn't be used for too long which was annoying.

I've had amazing results on myself though with ceramic therapy products - had really bad back/hip pain and a sore elbow due to bone chip but the wearing of therapeutic clothing has had amazing effect, putting an end to stiffness and tightness. So I have kitted out my mare in leg wraps and rug of the same stuff, have found both enormously helpful in warming up cold muscles and reducing any inflammation.

I use magnetic wraps on my 31 year old's slightly arthriticky hocks, they can also be used as tendon boots if legs are filled. They seem to help with both of these things.

I have a chronic back problem after putting out my sacroiliac at a sponsored ride (didn't see the small drop until halfway over the fence, sat back and it went *click*) I have a magnetic back wrap which helps a lot when I don't have time to visit the chiro :)

Agree with this entirely! Took the words straight from my mouth :).

I had a 24 yr old retiredTBxWelshD mare who had arthritis and was on bute. She got to the point where 2xbute a day wasn't working and we were looking at pts.
As a last resort I rang a local agent for a magnetic boots company (on recommendation). He delivered them to me that evening and as directed, the mare wore the boots for 24 hrs. She was in overnight for 12 hrs and didn't seem much different when she went out in the morning. She TROTTED in that evening, when she had been hobbling, even with the bute. She continued to wear the boots for 12 hrs every day, even when she was out 24/7 and was field sound. Unfortunately she had a stroke 3 months later and was pts. I don't think that the magnets caused the stroke.
The mare liked to wear the boots (she had never worn anything similar before) and used to hold her foot up for me to put them on.
I have since used the boots on other horses. None of them has made such a spectacular recovery but have seemed to be more comfortable, although they weren't in such a bad state as she was. I have lent them to friends who have had mixed results.

I was going to post seperately but will add here...

I am looking to purchase something for myself and horse but confused by the different types of magnets and products on the market ie material, bi/unipolar, "guess" strength etc and also weather they should/can be used long term/continuosly, or worn for long periods eg overnight or only for a few hours. Also does the magnet need to be applied direct to area or can be located, say as a band ion leg but still treating, say the back.

Can anyone advise?

I bought myself a magnetic bracelet from Olympia on saturday. I wore it saturday pm, and all night. when I went downstairs the next day, my knees felt much more 'mobile'. I also have metatarsalgia in my Left foot. This seems more comfortable as well.

I bought magnetic legwraps for Star when she damaged a tendon 6 years ago. Her bed was incredibly wet for 2 nights after she started wearing them. ? magnetic boots = increased kidney function????? I know that there was a change.

I am not sure about them. There seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting they work but nothing scientific and unbiased. My horse has arthritis and my vet thinks magnetic boots would really help him - he believes they do help to ease aches and pains. Personally I don't know whether bandages would do just as good a job, ie is it the magnet which helps or is it the action of the boots themselves keeping the aching joint warm? Vet says they *can* increase blood flow to the sore area so *can* help to reduce inflammation...(I think that's what he said anyway!).

I haven't bought any yet though...
