We are high up ln the Preseli hills ( not far from the highest licensed pub in Pembrokeshire) and yes we are on free draining sandy soil.
We tend to catch the wind across the land and that always dries us out fairly quickly.
I'm down the road from you, on the coast, and hoping I get to harrow and roll this year is my ambition 😂

We did have a day off from rain for most of yesterday. Back to normal wind & rain here in the we(s)t country today 😭
Other than a couple of dry weeks in September it seems to have rained constantly since early July.
With only 2-3 months of dry riding weather in the last 12 months I'm seriously questioning if keeping horses is viable.

I'm very envious. I'm near Cardiff but the Preselis are my spiritual home - you have the best of all worlds there. Incredible riding and walking, lovely little communities, fairly easy access to well served local towns and some of the world's best beaches a short drive away. We hope to make a move there once OH and I don't have to earn money to keep the beasts in hay and treats. We were up your way on Saturday walking the dog just before the weather closed in.

I look over to the Preseli mountains, they are stunning. They are a few miles north of us, but we can trailer and ride up there. We are lucky enough to have 2 horses and a handful of sheep on about 25 acres, so we can move fields regularly to avoid over poaching. We are on hefty peat, but as we are over 1000 feet up, and on a gentle slope, the soil stays damp, so it does drain and we don't have too much standing water, although gateways and water trough areas tend to get quite churned. Being so high up, and with the wind blowing straight over from Carmarthen/Cardigan, bad hair days are the norm.

It's still too wet on mine especially down the bottom, but going to try and book contractor in for two weeks time - hoping it might have dried out by then.
I think even if he can get most of it done and leave the bottom then I'd be happy with that!!
The grass just looks so old - it needs a refresh.

We had 5 days in a row with no rain so managed to do the bottom of the field near the stream so the whole field is done.
The weather is showery now so it's certainly not co-operating in helping people get their work on the fields done.

After 2 full days of windy dry weather we have managed to get onto the winter field and harrow and roll most of it just a small section where the steam runs that we didn't risk going onto.
Made a huge difference and the field looks really tidy.
Let's hope we get another dry spell so we can do the rest.
The grass is definitely growing and it looks quite green.

So its your fault we have had rain for the laat 24 hours 🤣😭🤣😭🤣
