Mane and tail detanglers/conditioners

I used Cowboy Magic many years ago when I lived in the US. It worked well on my horse's huge Shire tail.

I did once use it on my own hair when I was a student and regretted it. The stuff made a horrible, oily mess that took ages to wash out.

I think some of you know of what I speak -- Hermosa's tail puts itself into these twists, not like any horse I have had before. Gypsum's tail was voluptuous, but stayed straight even with my occasional half-assed brushing. The hairs on Hermosa's stick together and then twist around each other until you have long, matted dreadlocks, and pulling each one apart with my fingers is a little bit soul destroying. I'm not entertaining the idea of keeping it permanently in a braid, because she's turned out overnight and needs it to whisk flies. But yeah, some tail-maintenance regime that keeps it in okay shape (without tons of work...we're not showing so doesn't have to be perfect) would be sweet.

I find any kind of human hair serum works well for this. Few drops worked in well.

Argan oil blend also works

Ambers tails did the ringlets thing. Trainer said it’s a young horse thing and it will improve as they get older. I’m pleased to say that now she’s 7 that’s come true and no more ringlets. I didn’t find a good solution apart from tails bags and plaits. Generally left it well alone and only sorted it for shows. Then I washed and conditioned it , let it dry and then spent a good 45 mins brushing it out.

Am envious. In native pony world it's not something they grow out of. Friend was swearing about her 31 yr old Dales pony's tail recently 🤣
Both mine are 13 this year and twists and ringlets still there unless dealt with.

Some are worse than others, after a bit of healthy neglect decided to tackle 13 yr old pony's tail......OMG it was like one huge black ringlet or more like a dreadlock 😮 that did take some untangling and not ashamed to say I cut some of it off !

I just use human conditioner mixed with water. If I need something else I like Loveson detangler, or the IV horse one used to smell lovely, not sure if you can still get their stuff though.

Ive used Carr day and martin canter coat shine since I was about 10yrs old, If they ever go bust or something I will be devastated 😂
I've tried others (esp when they changed the spray bottle 😭) but always go back to that product as its the best.
I don't bother with the mane and tail just use the coat shine for all of it. Easy to brush manes and tails out fully and always get comments on how clean and shiny my horses are.
(It's really slippery so obviously dont put it anywhere near the saddle and wash off hands. I think everyone who's used this stuff learnt that the hard way!)

Cowboy Magic detangler. Pricey, but so good I use it on my own hair. Will literally detangler anything.
Another fan of this, here. I order the largest size bottle, which lasts me over a year each time. It's fantastic stuff and vital if you have a gypsy cob with much fluff! I use it on his feathers after washing, too. Applied once a week or so keeps him tangle free.

i love the carr and day and martin one, and my mum uses the coat shine one for everything because she thinks it’s better!

As an owner of numerous Spanish horses, I've always used Natural Equine's Top & Tail. Non sticky, great for detangling and keeps their manes tangle free and clean for a while.

My farrier would like to request that people don't put conditioner on tails the day he's due out.

I'm hoping he'll forgive me by the next visit 😳

(Dales pony - absolutely not grown out of the ringlet, matted, thick stage)

Eh? What is he doing with the tail? Is he one of those that ties it up or something?

Eqyss survivor serum is amazing stuff. You only need a little blob and it makes their manes/tails feel like silk and smell incredible. I just work it through with my fingers. I keep tails in a loose plait with a long section left out for fly swatting and this helps stop them getting so tangled.

Bobbi's tail does the ringlet thing too. A few squirts of C&D&M Canter spray, brushed through every week, seems to do the trick. If I remember. 😂

I like coconut oil for detangling, solid stuff is a PITA in winter but fractionated coconut oil is easy. I tried sweet almond oil but it gummed up the mane a bit. I do use it in my own total skin flint spray mix which is the oil, some cheapo human conditioner and a top up of water in an old spray bottle. Works a treat on my welsh cob and my new forest with a hairdo to rival an icelandic.

I do use cowboy magic or Carr and day and Martin on occasion but they're a bit pricier and a bit too slippery to use on manes that might touch your reins or saddle area! For in hand showing days only. Overuse of silicone based sprays can make hair brittle but it does make them awfully smooth and glossy.

The canter stuff is the elite (in my opinion!), however I tried the one from decathlon that was like £6 and that was ok!

Alfs tail is enormous, and gets a bit clumpy/sticky if I go in too hard with the shiny stuff. My go-to is Absorbine Miracle Groom, which leaves it feeling like a normal tail, and doesn't get greasy. 352327866_692193386000504_5740317227153408032_n.jpg

I always plait the tail up for the farrier.

I have Naf detangler at the moment and I’m not impressed by it. I much prefer Carr Day and Martin.
