Manes at Olympia

Whilst watching the show jumping at Olympia on tv I noticed that there seems to be a new 'Mane Fashion'.

They are about 5/6 inches long, and extremely straight and don't seem to move alot with the horse - am trying to find a link to a photo but cannot seem to find one!

Any ideas on how they achieve this? or has anyone managed the 'look' on their own horses?

I worked at a show jumpers yard, and many of the grooms do not know how to pull manes, and some horses dont like it, so they simple cut it so they still have the thickness to stay still and when a mane is scissored it is easier to plait

I can't pull my horse's mane, won't let me near him with either pulling or solo comb, so I have to clip or cut it but then I spend ages with tail rake trying to make it look like it's been pulled. I can't stand cut, straight manes. The horses who were plaited looked so much smarter

I absolutely hate scissored manes. People who do that to their horses need shot. Can they not see that they looks ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC!

It might look horrific but I would imagine that jumping those big fences cleanly is far more important than a hairstyle :-)
 
Yes, clearly - I'm aware it doesn't matter in the slightest so they can do whatever they like, but it only takes a good groom a few minutes to pull a mane, and it looks so much better. But it obviously doesn't matter to them, so fair enough.
 
Rockpaperscissors - it actually takes longer to make it look like that than it does just to pull it

Perhaps they do it simply to give the HHO experts something to slag them off about to get a break from the attacks on their obvious lack of riding ability, ill fitting tack, moral imperfections regarding hats, etc. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

neither of my boys are keen on having them pulled, and as the big fat plaits are *in* for dressage, a long straight even mane is dead easy to plait.

i dont plait for SJ so no issue there.

and yes, when sister was showing natives we used to straighten the manes with GHD's and lightly hairpspray in place

I really like it and thought the manes looked lovely.... Must be a damn sight nicer than having someone rip your hair out....

Haven't seen them, anyone have a link/photo please?
Personally, I feel that if a horse does the job does it really matter what the current fad for mane dressing is?
I'd rather be a groom doing a straight mane than one here doing DOZENS of tiny bunches (or braids) on a 3" long mane.
 
I think you'll find also that this fashion is not new. Showjumpers have been doing it for years.

I don't see why it matters, some of them actually look ok with it, and plus I doubt very much the riders care, jumping is the name of the game, its not a beauty pageant

munchkin-lol.i am actually evil, i also full clip EVERYTHING,layer rugs, use lots of bling, dress my horse up in needless but colour coordinating gear, hate hacking, wear a GPA because i think it looks cool..........
im going to hell i presume.......

If it takes longer to cut it with scissors so that the poor horse looks like it is looked after by a 13 year old called Chanelle who doesn't know any better, then why don't they just pull the ruddy thing?! It looks so much more professional and neat.

I completely understand that it doesn't matter at all in SJ but it just looks horrid all straight. If I had showjumpers they'd all have nicely pulled manes (and pulled tails. Which would sit just above the hocks.....ok, so I'd just have show horses

I'm guilty of using scissors; especially on my mare's mane but I cannot pull it as it's really thin so I just use thinning scissors to give a slightly uneven edge. It's also a good way of thickening up the manes, scissor them through the winter and then pull them in the eventing season it gets rid of the little short rubbed bits in my experiences.

As others have said the fashion isn't new but I think Wonderboy's was a bit too perfect imo but so what he left the fences up and won!
 
ah but does it (look more professional)...if pro's all have scissored manes then surely my scissored manes look more professional than your pulled ones.........

i genuinely prefer how it looks and love my floor lengths tails too!

To me, a pulled mane says "Look, I have grooms who actually know how to do it properly and how to turn a horse out well." But I realise I'll be in the minority when it comes to discussing showjumping - there is very, very little I like about it. Bleurgh!
 
that is an extreme but i love my horses long tail....people tell me to cut a good 8 inches off! bugger right off! haha i cut the ends off when they start getting dirty!

Prince33Sp4rkle , I must be your long lost, equally evil sister. I do all those things! My boy also hates having his mane pulled so often has a visit from a pair of scissors.

I hope in this weather you are making sure your exercise sheet matches your bandages. lol

Best way to shorten a good long tail is to turn foals out in the same field, they'll do it for you

im jealous, i got my horse back after he'd been on loan and they'd cut his mane. however instead of being nice and straight and flat it was stuck up in some bizzare mohican!!
