Hi, I am new to posting although have read quite a few posts researching ideas on this...
I am very lucky to have my two horses at home, however my current combination has thrown up an issue I have never had before (maybe I have been lucky). I have a just backed young gelding out with my sons little mare. He has been with us just over a month and is amazing in every way, however I can see their growing relationship is creating problems on both sides. He is nappy now to get out (ride through able but I don't want it getting any worse) but fine once out of earshot, and even she is getting a bit silly when out (totally unlike her). I have never ridden them out together and I bring them in separately. I cannot split the paddock (long story). I am at the point where I think I may have to get my son a little gelding as I don't want this problem escalating. Please help...any thoughts welcome!

I ended up with a third - 3 really is the perfect number ;)

Eta - once you have got two getting a 3rd isn't that much more work :p

Thanks for replying Fides. 3 would be lovely, just have to persuade the hubby :o) !! Just out of interest, would you prefer a mmg or a mgg scenario? I suppose an easy going gelding would hopefully keep himself to himself, I just worry if my young one objects a challenge to 'his' mare. The other way could create a 'harem' and make the problem worse. Oh dear, am I over thinking this?!

I've done both, usually without issue but I suppose it depends on the horse. The only time there was a problem was with two geldings who got very upset when the mare was removed. Having two geldings with the unridden one being the mare seemed to work best.

Eta but then you always have the issue of the possibility of a gelding getting possessive over 'his' mare. So maybe 2 mares and a gelding would be best? Oh I don't know :(

I currently have a colt, gelding and mare together and it seems to work ok. Colt gets a bit upset when his surrogate mum is removed but just does foal face at my gelding and grazes alongside him instead.
