Mare in season badly at the moment or something else?

My mare seems to have been in season constantly for the past few weeks and really excessively so compared to normal. For example, she did a wee on the concrete on Saturday and then had a wee when I was riding her on Sunday (both of these things previously unheard of). She is also winking alot and feels quite resistant to the leg and is kicking out a lot and bucking which is not normal. I have looked at her on the lunge and she looks absolutely sound and I had a lesson on Friday and my instructor said she looked really loose over her back. I was just wondering if the last season of the year can be worse than others? Is there anything else that can make them act like this i.e. infection?

The only other thing that is worth mentioning was that on Saturday morning her right hind was filled (around cannon bone area) but again when I looked at her, she appeared sound and the swelling came down with exercise and when she was out in the field, therefore I am assuming that she just knocked herself in the stable and it filled up with her being stood.

All thoughts very welcome!

I don't know much but my welsh C mare who has only just shown all summer is rampantly in season at the moment - goo everywhere. Yuck! I believe its the change from cycling to non cycling, kind of like a mini menopause. I stand to be corrected, though.

Its hard to tell, this summer my mare developed an infection, still not sure why, probably due to her having 6 foals years back and now being left with very slack muscles and thus not excreting liquids as she should. Dont want to worry you as it could be just her season, you know your horse best, it sounds like it might be worth calling the vet and at least asking for advice over the phone

It may be worth having her ovaries scanned as the kicking out and bucking seems to be through some sort of discomfort. I had this issue at the beginning of summer and a scan showed that her right ovary was quite a lot larger than her left and was pulling at the ligaments in the back (therefore causing sore areas when ridden).

I put her on Regumate for a couple of months and she has just come off it now.

Thanks for all your replies. Its good to hear that other people's horses are also rampantly in season at the moment and that sometimes the last season of the year can be worse than others. When I rode her last night, she didn't buck and kick out which I was pleased about but she did seem lethargic. I think I will see how she goes for the next couple of days and if no better I will definitely call the vet and have her checked.

Jetset - thanks, I remember your posts about your mare kicking and bucking and I thought of you when my mare started. If this behaviour continues the next time she is in season I will definitely get her scanned.

Hopefully she's ok. My mare was also visibly in season at the weekend. I've had her since late June and this is the first time she's winked her way past me and Henry. I haven't noticed an excessive weeing or kicking, though. That and the bucking does suggest some discomfort.

On a side note, wouldn't it be nice if we got a few months off, from our periods?!?

Thanks FranSurrey. Again its good to hear other mares are in season at the moment.

It would be lovely to have a winter off from our periods! Oh to be a mare......although I'm not sure I'd want to start behaving like mine is at the minute!

Mine is on box rest and soooo in love with the gelding next door.... She has been in season for the last couple of weeks, to the extend that she is kicking out at me when I want to put a rug on or make a fuss - she never has done this in the past... Must be in the air at the moment!!!
