Hi, is it possible for mares to be in season in December? I know generally it runs spring to autumn, but my mare was acting very Mare-ish today like she is in season. Could the weather affect them?

Yes, mine too. She's in her early 20s now and started screaming for and squirting at another MARE!!! She's always a tart around the boys when in season but this is the first time she's acted so weird. I am low-grade worried in case she's developing ovary or other hormonal problems. Is your mare older OP?

One of our racehorse mares has come in season this week - they all come in under lights mid December she obviously does not need it! She is only 6 and is out with all ages of mare - dont think this weird weather is helping - they have not done this before and all bar one have had a foal this year!

My 6 year old mare was in season last week. We were invited next door to use the school and she spotted a handsome Arabian boy adjacent to the school and that was it.

She spent the entire school session winking, (both ends !) at him, pouting, doing excellent half pass to get herself by the boards where he was grazing and fluttering her eyelashes at him.

Then on the way out she produced the most immense wee all over the neighbours concrete yard.

Now, the mare is Clyde x RID, built for comfort not speed, is unlikely to ever trouble the judge in any competitive field and a career as a pole dancer is a non starter. The poor girl was devastated when the handsome Arabian said
'you must be joking love, my legs don't stretch that far'.

She is still sulking and when forced to hack out with the Arabian a few days later called him some very nasty names and threatened to plant her size 13's on his pretty nose.

Is your mare stabled? stable lights can mimic natural light, and can lead mare's to come into season during the winter months, so this could be why, if your mare is stabled :)

I'm glad I found this post. My 6yo mare is heavily in season this week, despite the very cold spell we've just had. I was worried something might be wrong with her, but slightly comforting to know she's not the only one! It's still a pain though. Her poor 20yo 'boyfriend' is at his wits end!

Both my mares (16 & 5) were in season last week, much to the elderly gelding they share field with' s joy ( he's not allowed near them when not in season!)

My mare is seasoning too, she's 7. Until this year she's never been in with boys so now she thinks all her Chistmasses and birthdays have come at once. :D

This has just cracked me and the OH up big time, lol :D

It has just got worse, we hacked out with a 17hand grey TB this morning and she thought he was the bee's knee's. Of course being Boxing Day the world and his wife plus all the kids on their new bikes were also out.

I heard one child say 'why is that horse weeing and walking at the same time'?

Whatever made me buy a mare after 40 years of keeping geldings. I am off to Woolworths to get a huge bag of marbles and she can have the lot to play with. A little chat with the vet is coming up I think !
