We always had geldings. Then a few years ago we went to find a second horse and came back with a mare. When she sadly passed away we bought another mare and this pattern has continued. We had two unbacked mares who proved challenging and they were sold on. My percheron mare who had a filly foal sadly died but she was the most loving horse I have ever owned. So 23 years later we still have the old boy (long retired) and our homebred. plus a lovely kind cob type mare. The old boy keeps the girls in order despite being very stiff at times. So well, would I buy a mare or gelding, depends on temperament and how it has been brought up.
