Mare or Gelding Person What Are You? I

I know some people aren't fussed, but i feel i myself am a gelding person. I had a mare 15 years ago and she was a saint, but before her and since i've had geldings, i find them uncomplicated, i have recently got a mare on loan as a companion until i find my forever horse, i currently have a coming 3 gelding. Im finding it really difficult to bond with her. I think the reason for this is a friend had a really moody mare up until l a couple of months ago, she would bite, kick and be temperamental and generally wasn't trust worthy.

Im currently looking for my forever horse on a low budget under £2000 and have only seen mares that do the job i want, geldings seem to be sparse at the min.

Help me overcome my mare phobia :)

I'm a gelding person too, they're easy, but I think when you DO persevere with a mare and really bond & get the best from them, it's worth it - they give you that little extra something...not exactly sure how to explain it?
 
Well I have had both in my life but I think although I love my horse and we are very much a team I was more connected with a mare I looked after which is strange but we just clicked which sounds bad about my boy I have now as he neighs to me and everything but it was different with Lizzie. Not sure if that makes sense

Me too :D I had a fantastic time with my last stallion but no longer have the facilities to keep one. I am happy with the gelding I have at the moment though, but it isn't quite the same.
 
I've had mostly geldings. Never had a stallion. But my horse of a lifetime is a mare. If I were to go out looking for a new forever horse, I would probably lean towards mares now. Having said that, I would look at geldings too and it would be the character of the individual that would sway me rather than sex or looks/ability.
 
I used to think geldings were more straightforward than moody mares. But then I bought a mare and now I wouldn't have anything else. I can connect so much more directly with her, I know what she's thinking and there's just that spark in her eye when you look into her eyes.

It sounds nutty but I just feel so much more in touch with her thoughts and feelings than I ever do with geldings.

So I'm a complete convert. But it does help that she doesn't get awful when in season etc.
 
Definitely a mare person :) I have a mare atm and although she's a saint to do in all ways, for everyone, she will not show affection towards people she hasn't bonded with. When ridden, she will behave ok for everyone, but if she has bonded with you, no matter how hard the task she is given, she will try her little heart out to complete it. If i'm in trouble while riding, she'll help me out, if I get the striding wrong, she will try to sort it.
Saying this, she is also very opinionated and argumentative, if she doesn't want to do something, she will argue. But that's also why I love her, cuz she's my match with stubbornness, and her opinions. :)

I sniggered when I saw this - if I had brought Alf over for a temp stay, he'd have though he'd died and gone to heaven - ladies everywhere!

OP - I tend to like what I have at the time. I've had some fab mares, who I've really bonded with, worked with some stallions that I've loved, and had geldings that I've really got on with. Alf is my fave horse ever, but because of who he is, rather than the sex he is.
I do find it a bit sad to read that you can't bond with your mare because of how someone elses mare behaved
 
Dont be put off just cos they're mares. I was always a gelding person but then ended up with 3 mares. They were all amazing, so judge each horse on its merits, not on its gender!
 
I have only had her a little over a week now, and i do think the same it is sad, but after being around the other mare i seem to have a trust issue, silly i know, i am trying tho, i catch her groom her, she is very sweet, but i am very wary i just don't know why x

I've never specifically gone out looking for geldings only but I've had roughly 10 geldings and only 2 mares. I just prefer geldings in general, although wouldn't turn down a mare if I really liked her. I prefer my animals to be boys, dont know why but I just find I get on with them better (although saying that, my 2 cats and dog are all girls...!).
 
I have always been a gelding person, but I now own a filly and she is the sweetest thing. I wouldn't rule a horse out because of its gender, you can get good and bad no matter what they are :)
 
100% mares! They are fabulous. Got two at the moment and have had 4 in total. Would always look for a mare over a gelding every time :-)
 
I've always been a gelding person - never owned a mare.
But this may have something to do with the fact that 90% of the mares on my yard will kick the living **** out of anything that goes near them :/
I know this isn't just a mare thing - any horse can do this but just on my yard this seems to be the case!
 
I'm neither, I like both! Saying that I had a gelding who i shared and although he was the best thing since sliced bread to be ridden and handle he was to laid back and dare I say... 'Boring'! My old loan mare was a handful but the bond was so strong! Amazing pony I loved her so much, we just clicked and she had so much love to give.
 
This question pops up every nown and again and I've always tried to be pretty diplomatic with my answer, but not this time - I find this a ridiculous sexist question! So there! :p

* Breeders of course need the right gender for their breeding programme so are excused. ;)
 
I have always got on better with mares.
Only owned to one pony (a mare) but out of all the horses I've ridden I've got on better with the mares.
Wouldn't discount a gelding though!
 
My superstar horse was a mare, but she was a bag on the ground and I wouldn't have another, we have three geldings at home and I 100% prefer them, I wouldn't go to look at a mare unless it was very special.
 
Our first horse was a gelding and he was a wonderful 1st horse. Then sis & I happened to get a mare as our next horse and we've had mares ever since, partly because we now keep horses in multiples and the first mare wouldn't share a field with geldings.
Including the current 2 youngsters, we have now had 12 mares and we have never had one who has been particularly difficult, either to do or ride, when in season, although some have been tarty when grazing next to geldings. It is certainly true though that you should always 'ask a mare', they can be very opinionated and it is no good setting yourself up for a battle.

I'm a mare person... have had geldings and I always say 'going to have a gelding next', and then I end up looking at mares! Wouldn't discount any horse due to their gender though (apart from stallions as I don't have the facilities for one). On the lookout now for a new horse as Titchy sold, and so far it's only mares that have caught my eye.

Genie can be moody but not nasty, it's a case of persuading her that it's on her terms when it's not, but when she's onside she's absolutely amazing.
 
I have a mare but sometimes I wonder if life would be easier if I was a gelding person...... my mare is being a hormonal pain in the ar*e at the moment!!!! :mad:

I've had mares, geldings and stallions, and loved the entire boys best - so easy and friendly, all three of them. A month ago I would have put geldings next, then mares, but have just acquired a lovely mare who is an absolute joy. No mare ish behaviour, no face pulling, loving and friendly, people often think she is a gelding at first :)

I would never discount a horse due to its gender though, despite having preferences.

Agreed ;)


I've always personally preferred a male horse, as I always had a stronger connection with them and so on. Saying that the boys are massively outnumbered by mares here, not being in need of brood-geldings :D

For probably the first time in my life I am in love with a filly though, but if she had been a he I would still love her.

eta, just looking through at the rest of the replies, and I had to add, none of the mares are hormonal baggages, one is a bit of a biatch but thats nowt to do with her hormones, it's on account of her being a bit of a biatch.
