Mare or Gelding Person What Are You? I

I was always very firmly a gelding person until I met my mare and immediately clicked with her. I'm so glad I open minded in my horse search to actually decided to go and view her in the first place.

I wouldn't discount a gelding but have yet to find one I have had that instant click with, which has happened with all the mares I have owned.

Geldings! I've only had one mare and she was a cow, tried to grab anyone who walked past her stable! Although my mum had a mare and she was lovely, still geldings for me :)

Geldings for me...I tend to clash with mares :/

Thank goodness, someone shares my train of thought - I was worried that I was missing something!! I have never met a mare that isnt moody, hormonal and difficult, all the ones I have known are very quick to kick and or bite whereas my boys are just so laid back they are horizontal, they only ever kick flies and never bite. I have seen some fabulous looking mares for sale but have always discounted them, I personally would always have geldings. I dont like the sheath cleaning but as I see it, that is the only negative. But like I say, maybe I am missing something?!

I always had geldings as a kid! Now I have three mares and would always choose mares over geldings now! Mine all have their quirky little moments but they are all so affectionate.

Cant say I've ever had the same experience that mares are bite happy and kickers, I've found that a bad mannered animal is a bad mannered animal. I've known as many bitey/kickey geldings as mares, certainly, scar on my face to prove it (attacked by a gelding).

I think it's all personal preference, but I don't agree that mares are more inclined to be bonded-to-one-person horses, I've had/have geldings like that. It's down to the individual horse imo rather than what sex it is. I do think these threads are a bit weird that people get so polarised in their preferences and opinions from their experience of a very few beasts :confused3:

I get on with geldings better for sure..

Although I didn't take my own feelings at what I preferred over the years considering I had one gelding but 3 mares...

I take every horse as it is, same as people, I am also confused by these threads!

However, and this is probably a stupid question, I am into showing and dressage and from what I see, the top horses are male? Some showing producers seem to not even bother with mares at all, so I assume it has something to do with muscle development maybe? Stallions naturally produce more muscle, do geldings more so than mares??

Mares every time for me and OH the only males in our set up are unpredictable nasty and very grumpy so OH, cat and the vicious gelding are the only males and apart from grumpy oh I could live without any of them. The dog and the three mares are female are kind gentle biddable and have personality I have almost always had mares and have never even noticed when one was in season or had a mareish mare in 50 years with horses. I personally believe that badly behaved entires are just that badly behaved and it has more to do with those people that raised them than the fact they are entire

I've had both but currently have three mares. I had a gelding here last year and the two big mares were very unsettled by him so when he was replaced I decided on another mare and harmony was restored.

My next one will also be a mare, all the mares I've had have been calm and easy to get on with and no hormonal issues at all. I think as I already have mares it is sensible to stick with them rather than having a mix when I have such a small herd.

I'm a complete mare person. Never really felt any connection with a gelding-though funnily enough when I was learning proper jumping at a riding school a summer or two ago all i rode were geldings and they were lovely.
However, the only way I will have a gelding is if my mare pops out a boy in 2015-and I am hoping it's a filly!

This question pops up every nown and again and I've always tried to be pretty diplomatic with my answer, but not this time - I find this a ridiculous sexist question! So there! :p

* Breeders of course need the right gender for their breeding programme so are excused. ;)

Not sure comparing mares and geldings is sexist because geldings are not entire. So it's not possible to say whether any differences are due to gender or due to the absence / presence of sex hormones. A comparison between mares and stallions would be a better assessment of gender differences. Even that would not be truly fair though because difficult colts are generally gelded to make them more biddable.

If I had to choose I'd choose mares, but I have no strong preference.

Geldings are still male. Stop being pedantic! :p ;)

Having read a fair few of these threads - in many cases it does come down to sexism, generally against mares by female humans - which I find weird.

You are, of course welcome to disagree with me.

I've said it before, but my Vet has found that mares will often be allowed to suffer with painful conditions that are incorrectly put down to 'marishness' that are nothing to do with being female (eg - kissing spine) and if the poor horse had been male, she would have been called to the diagnose horse's problem far, far earlier.

how odd, I was just about to post a similar thread when I saw this one!
I do know a couple of nice mares, but they all seem to have stubborn streaks and days when they plant their feet and say 'no'. I've had mares and they've been horrid- my geldings have been absolutely lovely horses, never stubborn and always try their best - for this reason, unless I really knew the mare to be reliable (as far as horses and reliability goes!) I could never bring myself to buy another.

I am a mare girl!!! I have one mare and two gelding, one doesn't count coz hes a mini Shetland and was a stallion until a few years ago!

my big gelding is 3, and he is more of a princess than my mare ever has been! hes so much more sensitive than any mare I know! so defo still a fan or mares!!

I like my geldings but there is no horse like my stallion, hes a serious dude and he is a total try hard and he has given me more then any gelding or mare i have ever owned and once you click with them nothing is too much to ask as he is always trying to please. my gelding is argumentative and would rather not do anything and my mare will test you at every turn - stallion on the other hand is hard work but he puts in just as much effort if not more than i do myself... unlike my other two :o

Had both and have got to go with mares. i mean dont get me wrong geldings are lovely but i feel that i have more of a connection with mares, and i like that it seems harder to create a bond with a mare but when you have that bond you have a best friend for life. i would still buy a gelding though but if i had the choice a mare

Mare person! Not only because Missy is my first pony and is a mare but also because I always seem to get on better with girls (and they tend to love pink) so although they're a lot more work and have mood swings :p I pick mares :D

Mares all the way for me! I don't seem to gel with the boys and I love that mares have moods and are stubborn. Mine is as stubborn as they come but she generally wouldn't do anything to hurt me unless I've really irritated her and not read the signs! I feel like I can read mares whereas geldings can just do stupid unpredictable stuff without explanation!
