Im after some information from others with a similar experience please as a new experience for me.

Ive had my rising 6 mare for 10 months now ,always been a bit hormonal coming into season and have her on Oestruss.

She has previously had a foal at 3 and is an Irish sport horse.

She has seasoned all year round and has had signs of coming into season almost permanantly for the last 6 weeks but has become increasingly irritable on the ground ,dislikes being touched anywhere from the girth backwards ,has kicked the walls in temper and raised a leg if you go to touch her,all out of character.

Luckily she has been good to ride but as weve started to do a little more have found her to be tight in the back and struggles to canter on the left lead.

Decided to get the vet out and they scanned her today and found her right ovary has an enlarged follicle approx 68mm and so they have advised me to let her have Chorulon to encourage ovulation ,have taken bloods to rule anything else out and will rescan in 10 days.

Im really hoping this is the cause and she will be more comfortable and this is a one off.

Few things i want to check ,vet has advised a few days off which is fine as presume as it takes up to 40 hours may be sore ,may give her some bute.

Does the medication cause any behavioural issues and is an enlarged follicle something that tends to happen once or is it likely to be ongoing and if so what is the treatment.

Bit frustrated as moved her to a new yard in Jan and is typically going really well hacking out alone.

Is it reasonable to hopefully pick things up again once shes ovulated..

Thanks ..

This happened to my mare last year - she was horrible for 6 weeks (could barely get neAr her... then it all settled down she's marish when in season but fine the rest of the time.

the medication is just hcg and is given when broodmares have a folicle of 36mm or more to make them ovulate which depending on the size and stage the folicle is at this will normally happen within 36 hours. there is no effect on the behaviour or long lasting effect so after she has shifted the folicle she should be fine. If she does not release the next folicle then its worth discussing what your options are with the vet.

The follicle was 68mm and has another 3 small ones behind so i suspect its been causing discomfort for a while.
Can i ask what is the normal treatment for mares if this is a regular issue and are there any supplements that would encourage normal seasons.

people online cannot say what treatment the mare may need as it will depend on why the folicle is not ovulating.for example there could be a lack of estrogen or it could be a lack of lutinising hormone and they would need different treatment so it really is something that you would need to talk to the vet about as it is normally hormonal and they are the only ones that can give you the answer.
