So I chose to long hack my mare on the one of a very few days during season when she’s sensitive. You can never guess those days (I have her cycles om calendar) as she’s not outwardly grumpy to handle. I noticed the march but quite liked the energy, not turning for home as expected was the changer - once we did turn for home the march was angry so being asked to turn around 3 times for farm traffic took it up another notch. The final straw was a mum with a pushchair, two small children and a dog in the wrong place. She didn’t want to go forward or back (unless it was reverse) or stand so we did circles until she was vaguely listening and off we went home (with impressive self carriage and cadence) with me trying not to laugh at her! I’m doubling the oestress!!

some of them do seem to have extraordinary PMT. I have just popped my tricky one back on regumate for the autumn. It's like breathing a sigh of relief all round. My broodmare is the complete opposite, it was impossible to even tell when she was in season to go to stud, she's the same horse all year round. I guess people are the same!

Mine is a saint the rest of the time - I just can’t tell until I’m on and riding (and I don’t want to not ride for 5-7 days by following the calendar). No raised tail, winking, excessive peeing. She’s just hyper sensitive and her head goes up her backside - she becomes really hot. Last time I rode on one of those days was a lesson and we parted ways twice! Its worse this year (maybe worse now as shes on her last few cycles) so I might look at regumate.

yeah i haven't had a tarty pee-bag since my oldie retired so I don't get any outward signs with mine either, she is a professional napper at the best of times but cranks it up to 11 when she's feeling extra hormonal :p i find regumate in early spring and autumn is enough to manage her, rest of the year she's pretty normal (for her ;) )

Oh this brought back memories of my mare. It only happened on her first season of the year and only out hacking, so some years I would miss it. I did 5 miles home one time alternating from shoulder in to travers as it was the only way I could stop the ridiculousness.
