Marking Horse Rugs

Just wondered how many people write their postcode on their horse's rugs. I haven't in over 10yrs of owning horses but with thefts on tack etc going up wonder if it would be worth safeguarding. We keep all tack in the house so rugs are the most valuable items left at the yard. Also what do you mark them with, is ordinary spray paint ok?
 
Mine all have my postcode, surname, mobile number and Horse's freezemark painted on them in foot high dayglow letters.

Never had anything pinched (touch wood), and my mum hasn't been broken into since she started doing hers about 5 years ago (It was a 6 monthly occurrence before then).

You can buy fabric paint for opaque fabrics from Do-it-all or your local craft shop. Paint it on, let it dry and then iron it carefully through a towel.

It worked really well when the horse jumped out when we first moved down here. Someone from the village phoned me and said 'I've just seen a horse with this phone number on trot through the village'!

Mind you, I recycle mine regularly on ebay so I think it would be an issue for selling them on

Me to, I sell far to many rugs on eBay so there is no way I could paint my details on them. However, maybe if I did it would encourage me to stop buying new rugs (that I really don't need!

Yup, and they're the only things that haven't been taken over the years - including the non-post-marked rugs. They took a 10+yo headcollar and leadrope (looked it too) and 3/4 bag sugarbeet last time because everything else there of mine was named, but got a decent rug from the others.

I use whatever paint is around, ideally kitchen/outdoor/car spray!
 
I just use an indelible black marker. I put the horse's name and if it is a medium weight, heavy weight etc coz after a year or so I can't remember! I suppose that's not as safe as a postcode but if they got nicked they would have to be bought by someone with a horse named either Angel or Sunny! Mind you, after Angel's given her rugs a season of "use", they're not fit for much except the bin!
 
I've tried marking the outside of my Rambo Wugs but nothing seems to stay put on the outer shell for very long. I've opted for named sheep-tags, but that's only for in-yard indentification. Would be absolutely no use against theft.
 
All my turnouts are marked as when they were kept at home at parents, rugs were stolen all the time. If you didn't postcode your rugs there you were stupid.

To be fair, a lot of it is quite faint now, but still there, and where I am now no one marks their rugs. We were broken into in december and everyone had their rugs taken from inside the barn where the ones not in use are stored. Not sure if it I was just very lucky, but one of mine (I only had the one there at the time) was clearly picked up and then dumped back down (it was hung up). It had my postcode painted on in huge white letters. Probably more than just a coincidence!
 
All of my rugs are marked in indelible black marker pen with horses name and postcode - on both sides. I have never had one stolen, although must admit I don't know if it's because of the markings or not, because the rugs get so muddy and disgusting that the markings aren't always clearly visible.

All of my stuff, including rugs, is also marked with an invisible mark from a UV marker pen. Thieves wouldn't know this, but at least if any stolen property was ever recovered at least, under a UV scanner, it could be identified as mine.

Even with all that, I still keep tack and everything that's not in immediate use at home.
 
Tip for you, In W H Smith you can buy blank t-shirt transfers on which with a normal household printer you can print address labels which you cut out and iron to the inside of the rug, therefore not damaging the lovely new rambo rug you've just paid £££'s for!!
 
I paint Freezemarks onto my rugs with enamel paint - which just never shifts or fades. Selling rugs on is not an issue as they wear their rugs until they fall to pieces. We have had unmarked rugs stolen off their backs while out in the field.
