markings

Just a question iv been wondering while bored at work,

What is a nicely marked coloured?
How are some coloured horses not nicely marked?
Is it meant to be even on both sides?

I see in ads; " nicely marked"

But I'v never felt the need to mention anything other than colour when advertising horses.

Anyone have any examples of a nicely marked coloured and one not so ??

I'd be interested to know this too so will be watching this thread! I like a coloured with not much white on it's face ;P

A friend of mine has lots of coloured horses. Of hers, I like the ones without too much white, especially on the head. But also the placement of the white patches can make a difference to the appearance of the horse's conformation, so if the patches enhance the way the horse is put together, I'd say that was nicely marked too

See i like a horse with a dark head and and tail, but also love the quite white american pintos
But thats my personal preferance!
Makes sense about the confo too.

Jobo in imo i would say that side is nicely marked but the other side has to much white. but thats my preference, he is still bodey the wondercob all the same

Id say bodey is beautifully marked!
Also all coloureds should use him as a guideline for what they should look (and act) like!!

Totally agree, I would have liked more black on the other side as well (for less cleaning mainly), but hey, didn’t choice him for showing as not my thing anyway!

Luckily colour doesn’t matter for blasting across the countryside, he, he!

He hasn't got too much white on his head and none round his eyes so thats all I care about!!

I think that markings can mislead the eye, white on the rump can make a back/back end look short or odd, regardless of whether it actually is or not. Similarly, legs, and apron markings can make a horse appear lop sided. One of my minis is unevenly marked front and back and looks lopsided, not at all helped by having one entirely black leg and three entire whites. I prefer more dark than white on a horse.

I, personally, prefer overos where the white doesn't cross the back at all, downside to many overos is that they often have white faces and blue eyes and that isn't everyones cup of tea either.

It is a very individual thing.

I remember hearing this discussed by two people next to a show ring, and one of them expained 'well marked' as having an even ratio of white to dark on both sides, approximately 60% of which should be the dark.
Always remembered it cos I have a particular love of piebals, and found it interesting.
Could be a load of bull though.

My coblet is classed as tobiano, shes blue and white but her grey bits are more like splats? and she has a really white head with black ears!! (yes black)
She is mainly white, i love her to bits though!

i got told that my mare is beautifully marked but she is mainly white on one side with a black patch and then on the other side she has more black, she has nearly all white legs and a wonky white blaze. her blaze makes me laugh because when its dark its all you can see and because it goes straight then suddenly to the right it makes me giggle hehe.

i do the odd showing class (we rock veteran haha) but i didnt buy her for what she looked like i bought her because she will jump anything and is soo brave

and also at the end of xc shes not very white anymore shes nearly all black haha
