Matchy matchy ? Im not sure I get it ?

I dont do it myself, I am the sort of person that usually forgets to brush their own hair so it seems unachievable to me! I am enjoying having a black pony who can wear any colour-even though I am concentrating on yellow as it also makes him easier to see :D

so I might save up for a yellow endurance bridle but think that and the pad would be where it ended. I like seeing the endurance people out in bright colours but then I am one that thinks some of the more traditional turnout looks daft, outdated and with mind boggling (and numbing) rules. To each their own!

I do the ultimate in matchy matchy. All four of my numnahs (for 2 horses) are brown to match their saddles, girths and bridles. I have one white saddlecloth, which they share, for dressage. They don't wear bandages but the one who jumps also has a set of brown boots. Very occasionally I get tempted by a colour (a nice deep turquoise - I think Lemieux call it Peacock Green?) but I just can't bring myself to do it! I do like it (on others) but I think one matchy matchy set is plenty! I know one girls who must have about 5 different colours (including show jackets) for show jumping and she'll change them between classes. I could not be bothered with the effort!

Even when I was teenager I was the same and although I did have coloured girths and numnahs, I only ever wanted dark, understated colours (one bottle green set for XC to match my colours and one navy set for SJ to match my jacket) and usually just stuck with black (on black horse with a black saddle).

When Westrop overreach boots (the ones with petals) were all the rage, my friends all had different colours and would swap the petals over to have a multi-coloured set, I stuck with my white ones (to match his white feathers). I thought I was so classy!

I kept things simple with navy for everyday use and white for shows. Now I hardly ever ride but I think I would go for brown to match with the mud :D :D As for what other people do as long as the horse is looked after and tack fits it does not worry me.

But how do you do it ? Do you plan at home what colour youll have the horse in ? Or do you wear whatever takes your fancy and then co-ordinate the horse to match you ? Or do you generally stick with one main colour like others so it will pretty much all match whatever you choose? And do you still match even if there is no-one else there but you and your horse? Are your saddlecloths and bandages etc easy to get to so it takes no longer to tack up (my saddlecloths are in a trunk across the yard and a nuisance to get to in a hurry)

I've honestly not ever really thought about it. I usually have my pads on rotation, so a couple of clean/dirty ones in my car at any given time, same goes for tops/jackets as the weather is so blooming changeable at the moment. We have a small storage area about 10 paces from our stable which is where I keep our grooming kit, any boots and my hat etc. I tend to wear neutral or denim breeches, then throw on a top and grab whichever pad takes my fancy. I try to have multiple pads that match boots (I don't use bandages as I'm always super paranoid about tendons and find them a bit of a faff) as despite my many, many pads, it seems frivolous to have individual boots for each set so there is a bit of mix and match. I tend to be one of the quickest on the yard to tack up so I don't think it takes us any longer than if we didn't match....although I'm naturally quite an organised person so that probably helps. I'm often the last person on the yard of an evening and will still match, it sounds silly but I just feel smarter and more focused when we're matchy.

I was at a clinic a few months ago when a lady appeared completely decked out (her and the horse) in bright orange everything. Even the horse was a shade of orange. But the best bit was when I saw her loading up afterwards, into her trailer attached to a bright orange Range Rover :O :D

I have black and white saddle cloths/numnahs and the horses are black and black and white....do I qualify as matchy matchy?

cool :D I love orange, the right shade can look amazing on a bay-once saw a driving team of bay lusitanos with tangerine polos on and they looked amazing.

People think I'm matchy matchy but I don't go the whole hog. I don't use bandages, as horse doesn't need them, but I try and match my top to my saddlecloth. I also have a lot of navy and black as I find a lot of numnahs have that as edging and it's easier to match than the colours! More a case of I like to look neat and smart! Saddlecloths are pricy but I usually pick up cheap tops.

Beware you non-matchy peeps - it creeps up on you :)

I've always been a patchy-patchy kinda gal, though in my defence I do live in an area where wearing breeches instead of a boiler-suit makes you a bit flash ;) . Looking at the gear that we were wearing this morning we hack in matching pink flouro (my pony is manly enough to rock pink). Same gear will be out again tomorrow for a lesson in the school...........

I have yard matchy - headcollars, buckets, haynets & lead ropes, all colour coded to each Fuzzy. Default setting is purple :D

However, no matchy for riding as NF doesn't need any leg wear, no need for veil as fluffy ears with tremendous forelock :D
I have lots of black & brown saddle cloths etc :)

I haven't matched the fuzzy to the horsebox, should I go and get a new fuzzy, or re-paint the box? :confused3: :wink3:

What colour's the box now? Would you find an appropriately coloured fuzzy?

It might actually be easier to dye the horses. One of the liveries on our yard is a hairdresser so I'll ask her. Ideally, mine would be all black but I could live with purple. Obviously not green as would not be safe on the roads. High vis orange? Which hi-vis colour shows the least muck?

I like the Lemieux prosuede saddlecloths. Are thick enough to be cushioning without affecting fit. My saddler recommends them, and my three saddles are fitted on the assumption I only use these. (Other makes are different thicknesses).

I have 2 raspberry dressage (are about 4 years old). My horses both match if wear together.
2 white dressage cut for competitions.
2 Benetton blue GP cut for GP saddle (one 3 years old, and one fairly new)
4 Benetton blue dressage cut for the two horses

I have three sets of stirrups (all bought second hand), two are have a blue theme (somewhat coincidental)

So my bay horses can match in blue. I also have a Benetton blue (and two black) ear sets, for the fussy horse that wears ears.

And I have a Benetton blue polo shirt if I feel like matching the horses.

I don't do bandages, and the horse that brushes wears black and white boots.

From my point of view, I like the Lemieux prosuede saddlecloths, and can get them at a discounted price, and they wash brilliantly.

I'd hope the above sets me up with two horses for next 4 years!

I have to say, I typically put one numnah on saddle and use it until it needs washing and then swap it. I then tend to wash in batches of 4.

oh and I have colours for the horses, one is red and one is green. Headcollars, some brushes, feed buckets, rug tags / rug taped. But bears no relation to saddle cloth colours.

My new grey connie has a red thing going on at the moment (numnah (I don't like saddlecloths), headcollar etc) and I've a lovely new pair of breeches to match lol..

Nothing else matches though, and I live with two boys (husband and son) so they aren't interested in fancy stuff either :(

My trainer is very old school, so I know she wouldn't be impressed if I arrived for a lesson in end to end brightness...

I'd love to go matchy but horse demands half-lined numnahs and they MUST be sheepskin, not fleece, which means a) they're blooming expensive, and b) they don't come in fun colours. So he only has one numnah, which was originally white (only chosen because the white ones were half-price) but now... isn't.
Also, the only time he wears a fly bonnet is if it's hi-viz, and he never wears bandages, so I'd have to be organised enough to match him with ME. And then I'd have to start paying some attention to what I wear, rather than just sticking with fraying chaps and whatever jodhs/t-shirt come to hand.

Have a look at Premier Eq - they do sheepskin half lined pads in all sorts of funky colours. Despite that I bought a white one!!

Well.... horsebox is a bit 'battleship' grey.

NF is jet black..... TF is like a fresian cow in miniature and MF is orange & white.... :D
TF & MF do not really go on scheduled outings, much as they like going out :)

All advice eagerly sought :)

I think respray the lorry black with white decals and then if you ever take MF out you'll have to ensure that he's in head to toe black rug and bandages, and only unwrap when at a suitable distance from lorry.

Not ideal, but having got yourself into this situation I think you'll just have to make the best of a bad lot :p

We normally use a white half lined sheepskin pad with white boots but I will admit to having an emerald green LM pad with matching bonnet (she hates it and pad slips so I should probably try and sell the set) and a jade green (with brown and silver piping) pad with matching boots by rider by horse (I got it in an auction sale), which is very pretty and we get lots of compliments. Sometimes it's nice to scrub the mud off and dress up!

As am old, I should wear purple with a red hat (according to the Eizabeth Lucas poem) but I much prefer "matchy matchy" and why not? As horse is coloured, I do stick to fairly conservative colours and match my top if I can. Landsend had a polo shirt that exactly matched my bennetton blue set and as it was on sale, I bought two. I do have a purple lorry though which matches nothing but is very easily seen but I don't use purple on my horse. Goodness, people on here can be very churlish and judgemental, I would never "sneer" at another rider or anyone else for that matter, too busy trying to ride my own horse to be critical of others!

My horses are both bright bay, so they match the mud anyway. As long at where the tack goes is clean . . . .

My horse wants to be bay, sadly as an older grey horse his natural colour is near white.

Mind you, it will be rug on time soon, so he'll be clean for 6 months whether he likes it or not *evil laugh* :D

This, if it makes me smile, and I want to wear it. Only time I cringe is if someone has expensive matching clothing, but cuts other welfare and care corners due to finances, which you do sometimes see.

I know a family where mum, daughter and horse all wear pink, all the time - even a pink stock for dressage. Horsebox is also pink, horse isn't.

Thank you for your input, which will of course (not) be put into action :p
